What You Actually Need to Get Started

The smart home industry wants you to think you need a lot of stuff. You don't. Let's separate the essentials from the nice-to-haves.

The Only Two Things You Need

To get started with a smart home, you need exactly two things:

  1. A WiFi router - You almost certainly already have one. Most smart home devices connect to your existing WiFi network.
  2. A smartphone - iPhone or Android. This is how you'll set up and control your devices through manufacturer apps.

That's it. Everything else is optional.

What About a Voice Assistant?

A voice assistant (Amazon Echo, Google Nest, Apple HomePod) is the most common first purchase, and for good reason. It gives you hands-free control and acts as a central hub for many devices. But it's not required.

If you do want one, here's the quick recommendation:

  • Amazon Echo - Best device compatibility. Works with almost everything.
  • Google Nest - Best at answering questions and integrating with Google services.
  • Apple HomePod - Best if you're already deep in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, Mac).

Do You Need a Hub?

A hub is a device that acts as a translator between different protocols. You only need one if you buy devices that use Zigbee or Z-Wave (which don't connect to WiFi directly).

For your first devices, we recommend sticking with WiFi devices. They connect directly to your router - no hub needed. You can always add a hub later if you want Zigbee or Z-Wave devices.

What About Your WiFi?

Your existing WiFi is probably fine for a few smart devices. You only need to worry about upgrading if:

  • You plan to add more than 15-20 WiFi devices
  • You have dead zones in your home where WiFi doesn't reach
  • Your internet is already slow or unreliable

We cover WiFi optimization in a later lesson. For now, just know that your current setup is good enough to start.

Setting a Budget

You can start a useful smart home for under $100. Here's a realistic starter budget:

  • $25-50: A smart plug or two. Control lamps and appliances from your phone.
  • $50-100: Add a voice assistant or smart bulbs.
  • $100-200: A voice assistant plus a few smart devices (plugs, bulbs, or a thermostat).

Start small. Buy one or two devices, learn how they work, and expand from there. The biggest mistake beginners make is buying too much at once.
