Your First Automation
Controlling devices from your phone is convenient. But the real magic of a smart home is when things happen automatically - without you lifting a finger. Let's set up your first automation.
What Is an Automation?
An automation is a rule that makes your devices do something automatically based on a trigger. The basic structure is:
"When [trigger], then [action]."
For example:
- When it's 10:30 PM, turn off all the lights
- When I leave home, lock the door and turn off the thermostat
- When motion is detected at the front door, turn on the porch light
5 Great First Automations
1. Goodnight Routine
Trigger: You say "Goodnight" to your voice assistant (or at a set time)
Actions: Turn off all lights, lock the doors, set the thermostat to sleep mode
Why it's great: You do this every night anyway. Automating it saves time and ensures nothing gets forgotten.
2. Sunrise Wake-Up
Trigger: 15 minutes before your alarm
Actions: Gradually brighten bedroom lights, start coffee maker (via smart plug)
Why it's great: Waking up to gradually increasing light feels much more natural than an alarm blaring in the dark.
3. Away Mode
Trigger: Everyone leaves the house (geofencing)
Actions: Turn off lights, lower thermostat, lock doors
Why it's great: Saves energy without you having to think about it. Most ecosystems can detect when your phone leaves a certain area.
4. Motion-Activated Lights
Trigger: Motion sensor detects movement
Actions: Turn on lights, then turn off after 5 minutes of no motion
Why it's great: Perfect for hallways, bathrooms, or closets. No more fumbling for switches in the dark.
5. Welcome Home
Trigger: You arrive home (geofencing or door sensor)
Actions: Turn on entryway lights, set thermostat to comfortable temperature, unlock the door
Why it's great: Walk into a well-lit, comfortable home every time.
How to Create an Automation
The exact steps depend on your ecosystem, but the process is similar everywhere:
In Amazon Alexa:
- Open the Alexa app
- Tap "More" → "Routines"
- Tap the "+" button
- Set your trigger (schedule, voice command, or device event)
- Add your actions
- Save
In Google Home:
- Open the Google Home app
- Tap "Automations" at the bottom
- Tap "Add" → "Household" or "Personal"
- Choose a starter or create a custom automation
- Set triggers and actions
- Save
In Apple HomeKit:
- Open the Home app
- Tap "Automation" tab
- Tap "+" → "Add Automation"
- Choose your trigger type
- Select scenes or devices for the action
- Tap "Done"
Tips for Reliable Automations
- Start simple - One trigger, one or two actions. Add complexity later.
- Test thoroughly - Run your automation manually a few times before relying on it.
- Add delays if needed - If actions happen too fast, devices can get confused. A 1-2 second delay between actions helps.
- Have a manual backup - Automations can fail. Make sure you can still control everything manually (physical switches, phone app).
