What You'll Need

  • Amazon Echo (4th Generation)
  • Power adapter (included)
  • Smartphone with Amazon Alexa app
  • Amazon account
  • 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi network

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Position the Echo: Place on a flat surface at least 8 inches from walls for optimal sound. The spherical design works best with space around it.
  2. Connect power: Plug in the power adapter. The light ring will turn blue, then orange when ready for setup.
  3. Download Alexa app: Install and sign in to your Amazon account.
  4. Add the device: Tap "Devices" → "+" → "Add Device" → "Amazon Echo" → "Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus and more."
  5. Select Echo (4th Gen): Choose your specific model from the list.
  6. Connect to Wi-Fi: The app will prompt you to connect your phone to the Echo's setup network, then select your home Wi-Fi.
  7. Complete setup: Follow the prompts to set your location, time zone, and preferences.
  8. Enable Zigbee hub: The built-in Zigbee hub is automatically enabled. To add Zigbee devices, say "Alexa, discover devices" or add through the app.
  9. Add Zigbee devices: Go to Devices → "+" → select the device type or "Other" → "Zigbee" and follow pairing instructions.

Troubleshooting

  • Orange light ring stuck: The Echo is in setup mode. Complete setup in the Alexa app. If stuck, hold the action button for 20 seconds to factory reset.
  • Zigbee devices not pairing: Move device within 10 feet of Echo during pairing. Reset the device and try again. Ensure device is Zigbee-compatible (not Z-Wave).
  • Wi-Fi won't connect: Ensure correct password. Try 2.4GHz if 5GHz fails. Move Echo closer to router during setup.
  • Alexa not responding: Check for red light ring (microphone muted). Ensure internet connection is working. Try "Alexa, are you there?"
  • Zigbee range issues: Zigbee devices can act as repeaters. Add powered Zigbee devices (plugs, bulbs) between the Echo and distant devices.
