The Aeotec Smart Home Hub (sold as the SmartThings Hub in some markets) supports Z-Wave, Zigbee, and WiFi devices. This guide helps resolve hub connectivity and device pairing issues.
Hub Not Connecting to Network
Symptoms
- LED stays solid red
- Not appearing in SmartThings app
- Cloud connection fails
Solutions
- Check ethernet connection - Ensure cable is firmly connected to hub and router. Try a different port.
- Verify internet - Test that other devices can access the internet on your network.
- Power cycle - Unplug hub for 30 seconds, then reconnect. Wait 5 minutes for full boot.
- Factory reset - Hold the reset button for 30+ seconds until LED flashes. Reconfigure in SmartThings app.
- Check SmartThings status - Visit status.smartthings.com to verify cloud services are operational.
Z-Wave Devices Won't Pair
Symptoms
- Device not discovered
- Pairing times out
- Device shows as generic
Solutions
- Exclude first - In app, tap + > Device > Scan > three-dot menu > Z-Wave exclusion. Reset the device during this.
- Bring device close - During pairing, keep Z-Wave devices within 6 feet of the hub.
- Add as generic - If specific device type isn't found, add as "Z-Wave Device" and configure manually.
- Check S2 security - Some devices require S2 security. Accept the security level prompt during pairing.
- Network repair - After pairing, run a Z-Wave network repair in hub settings to optimize routing.
Zigbee Devices Not Responding
Symptoms
- Devices show as offline
- Commands delayed or ignored
- Devices drop off network
Solutions
- Check hub placement - Keep hub away from WiFi routers—Zigbee uses similar frequencies (2.4GHz).
- Add router devices - Powered Zigbee devices (plugs, bulbs) extend mesh. Add more if network is sparse.
- Change Zigbee channel - In hub settings, try a different Zigbee channel to reduce WiFi interference.
- Re-pair devices - Remove and re-add problem devices to refresh their network connection.
SmartThings App Issues
Symptoms
- App shows hub as offline
- Automations not triggering
- Device states not updating
Solutions
- Update app - Ensure you have the latest SmartThings app from your app store.
- Sign out and back in - This refreshes your connection to the SmartThings cloud.
- Check hub firmware - In app, go to hub settings and verify firmware is up to date.
- Clear app cache - On Android, clear cache in App Settings. On iOS, delete and reinstall the app.
