Amazon Echo Troubleshooting
Echo devices connect via WiFi and serve as voice assistants and smart home hubs. Some models include Zigbee hubs for direct device control.
Echo Not Responding to Voice
Basic Checks
- Ensure the microphone isn't muted (red light ring = muted)
- Check the device is plugged in and has power
- Verify WiFi is working by asking "Alexa, what time is it?"
- Try moving closer and speaking clearly
Voice Recognition Issues
- Retrain voice profile: Alexa app > Settings > Voice ID
- Check for background noise interfering
- Ensure the wake word is set correctly (Alexa, Echo, Amazon, or Computer)
- Try a different wake word if false activations occur
WiFi Connection Issues
Echo Goes Offline
- Check your router is working with other devices
- Restart the Echo: unplug for 30 seconds, then plug back in
- Move Echo closer to your router
- Check for WiFi interference from other 2.4GHz devices
Reconnect to WiFi
- Open Alexa app > Devices > Echo & Alexa > [Your Device]
- Tap WiFi Network > Change
- Follow prompts to enter your WiFi password
- Echo supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks
Smart Home Device Issues
Devices Not Responding
- Say "Alexa, discover devices" to refresh the device list
- Check the device is online in the Alexa app
- Re-link the smart home skill if devices are missing
- For Zigbee devices (Echo 4th Gen), ensure they're paired to the Echo
Echo with Built-in Zigbee Hub
Echo 4th Gen and Echo Show 10 include Zigbee:
- Pair devices: Alexa app > Devices > + > Add Device
- Put the Zigbee device in pairing mode
- Say "Alexa, discover devices"
- Supports up to 20+ Zigbee devices depending on type
Audio Issues
- Check volume level: "Alexa, volume 5"
- Ensure Do Not Disturb isn't enabled
- For Echo Studio, run acoustic calibration in the app
- Try a factory reset if audio is distorted
