General troubleshooting guide for Matter smart home devices across all platforms.

Device Won't Commission

Initial setup issues:

  • QR code: Use the Matter QR code on device or packaging
  • Numeric code: Manual pairing code (11 digits) as alternative
  • Same network: Phone and device must be on same network
  • Bluetooth: Enable Bluetooth on phone for commissioning
  • Factory reset: Reset device before commissioning (often 10+ second hold)

Thread vs WiFi Matter Devices

Understanding connectivity:

  • Thread devices: Need Thread border router (HomePod Mini, etc.)
  • WiFi devices: Connect directly to 2.4GHz or 5GHz WiFi
  • Ethernet: Some Matter devices support ethernet
  • Check spec: Verify device's connectivity type before purchase

Thread Border Router Issues

For Thread-based Matter devices:

  • Border router required: Apple TV 4K, HomePod Mini, Echo with Thread, etc.
  • Firmware: Keep border router firmware updated
  • Network: Thread network may take time to establish
  • Multiple routers: More border routers improve Thread coverage

Multi-Admin (Multi-Fabric)

Adding device to multiple platforms:

  • Share device: Use "add to other platform" in current controller
  • Pairing code: Generate new pairing code for additional platform
  • Fabric limit: Devices support limited number of fabrics (usually 5)
  • Primary controller: First platform usually has most control

Device Goes Offline

Connectivity issues after setup:

  • WiFi signal: Check signal strength for WiFi Matter devices
  • Thread mesh: Add more Thread devices to extend mesh
  • Controller status: Ensure Matter controller (hub, phone) is online
  • Re-commission: May need to remove and re-add device

Platform-Specific Issues

By controller platform:

  • Apple Home: Requires iOS 16.1+, HomePod/Apple TV as controller
  • Google Home: Needs Google Home app 2.62+, Nest Hub as controller
  • Alexa: Echo 4th gen+ can be Matter controller
  • Home Assistant: Matter integration (experimental, improving)
