Device Won't Commission
Initial setup issues:
- QR code: Use the Matter QR code on device or packaging
- Numeric code: Manual pairing code (11 digits) as alternative
- Same network: Phone and device must be on same network
- Bluetooth: Enable Bluetooth on phone for commissioning
- Factory reset: Reset device before commissioning (often 10+ second hold)
Thread vs WiFi Matter Devices
Understanding connectivity:
- Thread devices: Need Thread border router (HomePod Mini, etc.)
- WiFi devices: Connect directly to 2.4GHz or 5GHz WiFi
- Ethernet: Some Matter devices support ethernet
- Check spec: Verify device's connectivity type before purchase
Thread Border Router Issues
For Thread-based Matter devices:
- Border router required: Apple TV 4K, HomePod Mini, Echo with Thread, etc.
- Firmware: Keep border router firmware updated
- Network: Thread network may take time to establish
- Multiple routers: More border routers improve Thread coverage
Multi-Admin (Multi-Fabric)
Adding device to multiple platforms:
