When your Nest thermostat shows as offline in the app but still controls your heating and cooling, it is usually a WiFi connection issue. This guide explains how to get your Nest back online.
Why Nest Thermostat Goes Offline
- WiFi signal is too weak
- Router changed or password updated
- Nest servers experiencing issues
- App needs to be restarted
- Thermostat needs a reboot
How to Fix an Offline Nest Thermostat
Check WiFi Signal Strength
- On your Nest thermostat, press the display
- Turn the dial to Settings
- Select Network
- Check if it shows Connected and the signal strength
If the signal is weak, move your router closer or add a WiFi extender.
Restart the Thermostat
- Press the thermostat display to open the menu
- Turn the dial to Settings
- Select Reset
- Select Restart
- Tap OK to confirm
Wait a few minutes for the thermostat to restart and reconnect.
Reconnect to WiFi
- On the thermostat, go to Settings then Network
- Select your WiFi network
- Enter your password if prompted
- Wait for it to connect
Force Close the Nest App
Some users find that leaving the app running in the background causes connection issues. Force close the app completely, wait a few seconds, then reopen it.
Check Your Internet Connection
Make sure your home internet is working by visiting nest.com on another device. If that works but the thermostat still shows offline, the issue is between your thermostat and router.
Factory Reset as Last Resort
If nothing else works, a factory reset often fixes persistent connection issues:
- Go to Settings then Reset
- Select All Settings
- Confirm the reset
- Set up the thermostat again in the Nest app
