If your Ring Stick Up Cam (Battery or Plug-In) won't connect to WiFi, isn't recording video, or has motion detection problems, this guide covers the most common issues and solutions.
Camera Won't Connect to WiFi
When setup fails or WiFi disconnects:
- Ensure you're connecting to a 2.4GHz network (5GHz supported on newer models)
- Move the camera closer to your router during setup
- Check WiFi password doesn't have special characters
- Restart your router before attempting setup
- Check signal strength in Device Health after setup
- Use the RSSI reading - should be -60 or better
Battery Draining Too Quickly
For battery model power issues:
- Reduce motion sensitivity to decrease activations
- Create smaller motion zones to limit detection area
- Adjust motion frequency settings
- Reduce Live View usage - it drains battery fast
- Position camera to avoid high-traffic areas like busy streets
- Use solar panel accessory for continuous charging
Motion Detection Not Working
If the camera isn't detecting motion:
- Verify Motion Detection is enabled in device settings
- Check Motion Zones cover the right areas
- Increase motion sensitivity if set too low
- Ensure Motion Alerts are enabled
- Check Motion Schedule isn't blocking detections
- Clean the camera lens
Not Recording or Missing Events
When video isn't being saved:
- Verify your Ring Protect subscription is active
- Check that Motion Recording is enabled
- Verify Modes settings aren't preventing recording
- Check WiFi connection - poor signal causes missed events
- Ensure Motion Zones include the area you want recorded
- Review Motion Verification settings
Live View Not Loading
If Live View fails to connect:
- Check camera is online in Device Health
- Force close Ring app and reopen
- Switch between WiFi and cellular on your phone
- Power cycle the camera (remove battery or unplug)
- Check your internet upload speed
- Try Live View from another device
Poor Video Quality or Night Vision Issues
For video quality problems:
- Clean the camera lens with a soft dry cloth
- Check WiFi signal strength - weak signal reduces quality
- Ensure Color Night Vision is enabled if supported
- Avoid pointing at reflective surfaces for IR issues
- Check video quality settings in the app
- Position camera away from direct light sources
Two-Way Audio Not Working
When you can't talk or hear through the camera:
- Grant microphone permissions to Ring app
- Check your phone's microphone is working
- Tap and hold the microphone button while speaking
- Ensure camera speaker isn't obstructed
- Check phone volume isn't muted
- Restart the Ring app
