Light Sensors

Ambient light sensors measure how bright a room actually is, so lighting automations respond to real conditions rather than a fixed clock.

The practical difference is on overcast afternoons. A schedule set for sunset leaves the room gloomy at 3pm in winter; a lux threshold turns lights on when the room genuinely needs them. This is one of the cheapest upgrades to an existing lighting setup.

Most standalone light sensors report in lux over Zigbee or Z-Wave. Many motion sensors already include one, so check what you own before buying separately — a combined motion and lux sensor covers both jobs and halves the battery count.
