Outdoor Lights

Outdoor smart lighting is where a lot of people hit their first real snag with home automation. Between weather, WiFi range, and power availability, outdoor setups need more planning than indoor ones.

IP ratings are the first thing to check. The two digits tell you about solid and liquid protection. Here's what matters:

• IP44 -- Protected from splashing water. Fine under a covered porch, not for direct rain.
• IP65 -- Dust-tight and protected against water jets. Good for most outdoor wall lights, garden fixtures, and string lights. The sweet spot.
• IP67/IP68 -- Handles submersion. Needed for ground-level landscape lights that might sit in puddles, or anything near a pool.

If a product just says "outdoor rated" without listing an IP rating, be skeptical.

Low voltage landscape vs. line voltage: Low-voltage systems (12V/24V) run off a transformer and are safe to install yourself -- just stake lights into the ground and run cable. Ring, Philips Hue, and others make smart landscape kits. Line-voltage fixtures (120V) are your porch lights, sconces, and floodlights. Swapping those for smart versions is usually simple, but new outdoor wiring runs need an electrician.

Solar options are tempting but limited. Most are dim and unreliable in winter or shady spots. Fine for pathway markers, but don't expect them to light up a yard. Battery-powered lights are brighter but need recharging every few months.

The WiFi range problem. Your router might reach the front porch, but the back fence 80 feet away? Probably not. Solutions:

• Mesh WiFi -- A node near a window facing your yard helps a lot.
• Zigbee/Z-Wave mesh -- Outdoor smart plugs can extend the mesh into your yard.
• Thread -- Thread devices mesh too, and can bridge the gap to far corners of your property.

One thing people forget: outdoor automations are incredibly useful. A pathway that lights up when you pull in, porch lights that come on at dusk and off at midnight -- once you set these up, you won't go back.
