What You'll Need
- Aeotec Smart Switch 7
- Z-Wave smart home hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant with Z-Wave stick, etc.)
- Standard 120V outlet
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in the Aeotec Smart Switch 7. The RGB LED ring will light up to confirm power.
- Put your hub in inclusion mode.
- Press the action button on the smart switch once. The LED ring will pulse or change color during the pairing process.
- Wait for your hub to confirm the connection is established.
- Configure settings in your hub's device interface. The Aeotec Smart Switch 7 has extensive configuration parameters for energy reporting, LED colors, and safety features.
Key Features
- Z-Wave Plus 700 series with excellent range
- Comprehensive energy monitoring: watts, kWh, voltage, and current
- RGB LED ring with customizable colors
- SmartStart and S2 security
- 15A capacity
- Over-current protection that automatically shuts off if load is too high
- Works as a Z-Wave repeater
RGB LED Ring Configuration
The LED ring on the Smart Switch 7 is one of its standout features. Through your hub's parameter settings, you can configure:
- Color when on: Choose any RGB color to indicate the plug is active.
- Color when off: Set a different color (or turn off the LED) when the plug is in standby.
- Brightness level: Adjust the LED brightness from dim to full.
- Power-based color: Some configurations let the LED color change based on the current power consumption, giving you a visual indicator of how much electricity a device is drawing.
- Disable entirely: If you prefer no light at all, you can turn the LED ring off completely.
Practical Use Cases
- Visual power indicator: Set the LED ring to change from green to yellow to red as power consumption increases. You get an at-a-glance view of how hard a device is working.
- Energy auditing: The detailed reporting makes this plug ideal for tracking the real cost of specific appliances over time.
- Server/equipment monitoring: Use the over-current protection and energy monitoring to keep tabs on important equipment. Set up alerts through your hub when power draw spikes unexpectedly.
Troubleshooting
- Inclusion fails: Exclude the device first by putting your hub in exclusion mode and pressing the action button. Then try including again.
- LED ring colors not changing: LED customization is done through Z-Wave configuration parameters in your hub's device settings. Check the Aeotec documentation for the specific parameter numbers for your hub.
- Energy reports not coming through: Enable reporting in the device configuration parameters. By default, some reporting may be disabled or set to very high thresholds. Lower the wattage change threshold and set a periodic reporting interval.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the action button for 20 or more seconds until the LED flashes in a reset pattern. This is a longer hold than most Z-Wave devices.
- Over-current protection triggered: If the plug shuts off unexpectedly, the connected device may have exceeded the 15A limit. Check the wattage and try a lower-draw device. The plug should resume normal operation after the overload is removed.
