What You'll Need

  • Eve Energy Outdoor
  • Apple device (iPhone or iPad) with the Home app
  • Outdoor GFCI-protected outlet
  • A Thread border router recommended (Apple TV 4K 2nd gen or later, or HomePod mini)

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Plug the Eve Energy Outdoor into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. Test the GFCI by pressing the test and reset buttons to confirm it is working.
  2. Open the Apple Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
  3. Tap "+" and select "Add Accessory."
  4. Scan the HomeKit code on the device or its packaging. You can also hold your phone near the plug for automatic detection.
  5. Assign to an outdoor room like "Backyard," "Patio," or "Front Yard."
  6. Name each outlet. The Eve Energy Outdoor has two independently controlled outlets, so give each one a unique name for Siri commands.

Key Features

  • IP55 weather-resistant rating (stronger than the typical IP44 on competing outdoor plugs)
  • Two independently controlled outlets
  • Thread and Bluetooth connectivity
  • Native Apple HomeKit with no bridge
  • Matter compatible for future cross-platform use
  • Energy monitoring per outlet
  • Siri voice control
  • No cloud account needed

Thread for Outdoor Use

Thread is especially valuable for outdoor plugs because it creates a mesh network that extends through walls:

  • Range extension: Thread signals can hop between Thread devices to reach outdoor locations. If you have Thread devices near exterior walls, they help relay the signal to the outdoor plug.
  • Position your border router wisely: Place your Apple TV or HomePod mini on the same floor and as close to the outdoor plug's wall as practical. Thread signals pass through walls better than Wi-Fi in many cases.
  • Mesh building: Other Eve devices, Nanoleaf bulbs, or any Thread router device inside your home can act as relay points to reach the outdoor plug.

HomeKit Automations for Outdoor Use

  • Location-based: Turn on porch lights when anyone in the household arrives home, and turn them off when the last person leaves.
  • Time-based: Set landscape lights to turn on at sunset and off at a specific time. HomeKit calculates sunset automatically based on your location.
  • Scene-based: Create an "Entertaining" scene that turns on both outlets with patio lights and a water feature, triggered from your phone or by voice with Siri.

Energy Monitoring

Each outlet tracks power consumption independently. Download the free Eve app to see:

  • Per-outlet wattage and kWh consumption
  • Historical usage charts for each outlet
  • Projected monthly costs based on your configured electricity rate

Troubleshooting

  • Outdoor connectivity issues: Thread signals extend through walls more effectively than many people expect. If you still have issues, add a Thread device (like an Eve Energy or Nanoleaf bulb) near the interior side of the wall closest to the outdoor outlet.
  • Both outlets offline: Check the GFCI outlet first. A tripped GFCI cuts all power. Press the reset button on the outlet. Also verify your Thread border router is online.
  • Per-outlet energy data: The Apple Home app shows basic on/off status. For per-outlet consumption data, install the Eve app (free).
  • Factory reset: Press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes. Remove the accessory from the Home app, then re-add it by scanning the HomeKit code.
  • "No Response" after storms: Heavy weather can trip GFCI outlets. Check the outlet's reset button. If the plug is wet, let it dry before restoring power. The IP55 rating handles normal rain and splashing, but direct water jets should be avoided.
