What You'll Need
- Eve Energy Smart Plug
- Apple device (iPhone or iPad) with the Home app
- HomeKit home already set up in the Apple Home app
- A Thread border router for best performance (Apple TV 4K 2nd gen or later, or HomePod mini)
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in the Eve Energy. There is no separate power button; it is active as soon as it has power.
- Open the Apple Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Add the accessory:
- Tap the "+" button and select "Add Accessory"
- Point your camera at the HomeKit code on the Eve Energy or its packaging
- Alternatively, hold your phone close to the plug for automatic NFC-based detection
- Assign to a room and give the plug a name that works well with Siri, like "desk lamp" or "bedroom fan."
- Optional but recommended: Download the Eve app for detailed energy tracking charts and additional configuration options not available in the Apple Home app.

Thread Network Benefits
The Eve Energy is a Thread device, which gives it significant advantages over Bluetooth-only or Wi-Fi smart plugs:
- Speed: Thread devices respond faster than Bluetooth accessories, especially when you have a Thread border router nearby.
- Reliability: Thread creates a mesh network. Every Thread device can relay data for other Thread devices, so adding more Eve products actually improves your network coverage.
- No cloud: Thread communication stays entirely on your local network. There are no cloud servers involved, and no account to create.
- Requirements: You need at least one Thread border router. Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) and HomePod mini both serve this role. Without a border router, the Eve Energy falls back to Bluetooth, which is slower and has shorter range.
Energy Monitoring with the Eve App
While the Apple Home app shows basic on/off status, the dedicated Eve app unlocks the full energy monitoring capabilities:
- Real-time wattage display
- Projected monthly costs based on your electricity rate (which you can configure in the app)
- Detailed historical consumption charts
- Total kWh consumed over days, weeks, and months
Troubleshooting
- "No Response" in the Home app: This usually means the plug cannot communicate with your home hub. Check that your Thread border router (Apple TV or HomePod mini) is powered on and connected to your network. If you do not have a border router, the plug uses Bluetooth, which has limited range.
- Slow response times: A Thread border router dramatically improves response time. If you are relying on Bluetooth alone, responses may take 1-2 seconds. Adding an Apple TV 4K or HomePod mini fixes this.
- Energy data only in Eve app: The Apple Home app does not display energy data. Install the Eve app (free) to access all energy monitoring features.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the button on the plug for 10 seconds until the LED flashes. Then remove the accessory from the Home app and re-add it.
- HomeKit code lost: The code is printed on the plug body itself and also on a card in the packaging. If both are lost, you may need to contact Eve support.
