What's in the Box
The GE Enbrighten Zigbee Smart Outlet package includes the in-wall smart outlet, a wall plate, wire connectors, and a quick start guide. This receptacle replaces a standard duplex outlet and uses the Zigbee protocol to communicate with your smart home hub. It features one smart-controlled outlet and one always-on outlet, giving you the flexibility to automate one device while keeping another constantly powered.
Prerequisites
- A compatible Zigbee hub such as SmartThings, Hubitat, Amazon Echo (with built-in Zigbee), or Home Assistant with a Zigbee coordinator like HUSBZB-1 or Sonoff Zigbee stick
- A standard electrical outlet box with hot, neutral, and ground wires
- A neutral wire in the outlet box — this device requires a neutral connection
- Basic electrical tools: screwdriver, wire stripper, non-contact voltage tester, and wire nuts
- Hire a licensed electrician if you're not experienced with electrical wiring
Safety First
Turn off the circuit breaker for the outlet you plan to replace. Verify the wires are de-energized using a non-contact voltage tester. Test by plugging a lamp into the existing outlet to make sure it has no power before you begin.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Remove the existing outlet. Unscrew the wall plate and pull the old receptacle out from the electrical box. Disconnect all wires and note their positions.
- Identify your wires. Locate the hot (black) line wire, white neutral wire, and green or bare ground wire. In mid-circuit boxes, you may have two sets of each — one incoming from the breaker and one outgoing to the next outlet.
- Wire the Zigbee outlet. Connect the hot wire to the Line terminal (brass). Attach the neutral wire to the Neutral terminal (silver). Connect the ground to the Ground screw (green). If continuing the circuit to another outlet, connect the outgoing wires to the corresponding pass-through terminals.
- Mount the outlet. Push the wires carefully into the box, screw the smart outlet in place, and attach the wall plate.
- Restore power. Turn the breaker back on. The LED indicator on the outlet should be visible, showing it's ready for pairing.
Zigbee Hub Pairing
Put your Zigbee hub into pairing mode (the steps depend on your hub — check your hub's documentation). Press the on/off button on the Enbrighten outlet once. The hub should discover the device within 30 seconds. Once detected, the outlet will appear as a switch or smart plug in your hub's device list. Give it a clear name and assign it to a room.
Smart Home Integration Tips
With the Zigbee outlet connected to your hub, you can set schedules, create automations, and enable voice control through Alexa or Google Assistant. Plug a holiday light string or table lamp into the smart-controlled socket and automate it based on time, sunset triggers, or presence detection. The always-on socket is ideal for devices that need uninterrupted power. As a Zigbee device, this outlet functions as a Zigbee repeater, strengthening the mesh network for other Zigbee sensors and devices in your home.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the outlet doesn't power up, verify wire connections and check the breaker. If the hub doesn't find it during pairing, try a factory reset by pressing and holding the button on the outlet for about 10 seconds until the LED blinks. Then retry the pairing process. If the outlet loses connection intermittently, ensure you have enough Zigbee repeaters in your network to maintain a strong mesh signal path between the hub and this outlet.
