What You'll Need
- Geeni Outdoor Duo Smart Plug
- Geeni app (iOS or Android)
- Geeni account
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Outdoor GFCI-protected outlet
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug into an outdoor GFCI outlet. Verify the GFCI is working by pressing the test button, then pressing reset.
- Download the Geeni app if you do not have it, and sign in to your account.
- Add the device:
- Tap "+" and then "Add Device"
- Select the outdoor plug type from the list
- LEDs on the plug should be blinking, indicating pairing mode
- Connect to Wi-Fi by entering your 2.4GHz network credentials.
- Name each outlet. The Outdoor Duo has two independent outlets, so give each one a clear name like "path lights" and "patio fountain."
Key Features
- IP44 weather-resistant rating
- Two outlets with individual smart control
- Works with Alexa and Google Assistant
- Per-outlet scheduling
- Sunrise/sunset triggers based on your location
- 15A total capacity shared between outlets
Sunrise/Sunset Triggers
The Geeni app can trigger each outlet based on local sunrise and sunset times. This is especially useful for outdoor lighting:
- Set pathway lights to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise for all-night illumination.
- Use an offset to turn lights on 30 minutes before sunset so they are already on when it gets dark.
- Each outlet can have different sunrise/sunset settings, so accent lights can turn off at midnight while safety lighting stays on all night.
Practical Outdoor Use Cases
- Front yard lighting: Run walkway lights on one outlet and porch accent lights on the other, each on its own sunset-based schedule.
- Backyard entertainment: Control string lights and a Bluetooth speaker's charger or water feature independently from the app.
- Holiday displays: Different decorations on different schedules without needing separate outdoor timers for each one.
Outdoor Installation Tips
- Install under an eave or weather cover whenever possible for extra protection beyond the IP44 rating.
- Avoid placing the plug where standing water or snow can accumulate around it.
- Route extension cords downward from the plug so water does not run down the cord into the connection.
- The combined load on both outlets should not exceed 15A. Check the wattage of all connected devices.
Troubleshooting
- Outdoor Wi-Fi is unreliable: Outdoor locations are often at the fringe of your Wi-Fi coverage. A mesh node near the closest interior wall or an outdoor access point can fix this. Thick brick or stucco walls are especially tough for Wi-Fi signals to penetrate.
- Both outlets go offline: Check the main Wi-Fi connection first. If your router is down, all smart devices lose connectivity. Also check the GFCI outlet to make sure it has not tripped.
- GFCI keeps tripping: Reduce the connected load and check for moisture in any exposed connections. If the GFCI trips with nothing plugged into the smart plug, the outlet itself may be faulty.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the button until the LED changes pattern. This resets the plug to factory defaults for fresh setup.
- Only one outlet discovered: Both outlets should appear after pairing. If one is missing, remove the plug from the Geeni app and re-add it from scratch.
