What You'll Need

  • Geeni Spot Smart Wi-Fi Plug
  • Geeni app (iOS or Android)
  • Geeni account
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Download the Geeni app and create an account or sign in.
  2. Plug in the Geeni Spot. The LED should start blinking rapidly, indicating it is ready for pairing.
  3. Add the device in the Geeni app:
    • Tap "+" and then "Add Device"
    • Select "Plugs and Switches" from the categories, then "Smart Plug"
    • Follow the setup wizard
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi by entering your 2.4GHz network name and password when prompted.
  5. Name your plug and assign it to a room for organization.

Key Features

  • Compact design that does not block the adjacent outlet
  • Works with Alexa and Google Home
  • Geeni app scheduling and automation
  • Countdown timers for automatic shutoff
  • Group control for managing multiple plugs
  • Status LED indicator

EZ Mode vs. AP Mode Setup

The Geeni Spot is built on the Tuya platform, which offers two pairing methods:

  • EZ Mode (default): The LED blinks rapidly. The app broadcasts your Wi-Fi info to the plug. This is the faster method and works most of the time.
  • AP Mode (backup): If EZ mode fails, the app will offer AP mode. The LED switches to a slow blink, and your phone connects directly to the plug's Wi-Fi hotspot to transfer credentials. This method is more reliable on mesh routers and networks with multiple access points.

Practical Use Cases

  • Budget home automation: Geeni plugs are affordable and work reliably with Alexa and Google. They make a good starting point if you are new to smart home devices.
  • Grouped lamp control: Buy several Geeni plugs and group them in the app. Turn all living room lamps on or off with a single voice command or app tap.
  • Countdown safety timer: Use the countdown feature for devices you do not want left on, like a curling iron, soldering station, or space heater. Set a 2-hour countdown and the plug shuts off automatically.

Voice Assistant Tips

  • Alexa: Enable the "Geeni" skill in the Alexa app and link your account. Devices sync automatically.
  • Google Home: Link Geeni through "Works with Google" in the Google Home app settings.
  • For best results, use simple, unique names that do not overlap with other device names. "Desk lamp" works better than "the lamp on my desk."

Troubleshooting

  • Plug not in pairing mode: Press and hold the button for 5 seconds until the LED starts blinking rapidly. This forces the plug back into EZ pairing mode.
  • EZ mode fails: Switch to AP mode. The app usually offers this option automatically after an EZ mode failure. You can also trigger AP mode by holding the button until the LED changes from rapid blink to slow blink.
  • 5GHz network not supported: Geeni plugs only work on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. If your router combines both bands, try disabling 5GHz temporarily during setup, or move far from the router so your phone prefers the 2.4GHz band.
  • Factory reset: Press and hold the button until the LED starts blinking rapidly again. The plug clears its settings and returns to pairing mode.
  • Plug disconnects frequently: Check Wi-Fi signal strength at the plug location. These compact plugs have small antennas, so they can be more sensitive to weak signals. Moving the router closer or adding an extender usually fixes recurring disconnects.
