What's in the Box

The Home Assistant SkyConnect is a compact USB dongle designed to bring Zigbee connectivity directly to your Home Assistant installation. Inside the packaging, you'll find the SkyConnect USB stick itself and a short USB extension cable. The extension cable is important — using it helps reduce wireless interference from your computer or hub's USB ports, which can significantly improve Zigbee range and reliability.

Prerequisites

Before you begin setup, make sure you have the following ready:

  • A running Home Assistant instance (version 2022.9 or later recommended) on a Home Assistant Green, Yellow, or any other compatible hardware
  • An available USB port on your Home Assistant host device
  • A stable network connection to access the Home Assistant web UI
  • Any Zigbee devices you want to pair nearby and in their default or pairing-ready state

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Plug the SkyConnect into the included USB extension cable, then connect the extension cable to an available USB port on your Home Assistant host. Position the dongle away from other USB devices and electronics for the best signal.
  2. Open your Home Assistant web UI in a browser. Navigate to Settings > Devices & Services. Home Assistant should automatically detect the SkyConnect and prompt you to set it up.
  3. If the dongle is not automatically discovered, click Add Integration, search for Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA), and select it. Choose the SkyConnect as the serial port when prompted.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to configure ZHA. The default settings work well for most users. Home Assistant will initialize the Zigbee coordinator on the SkyConnect.
  5. Once the integration is configured, you'll see the ZHA integration listed under your devices. The SkyConnect is now acting as your Zigbee coordinator.

Pairing Your First Zigbee Device

To add a Zigbee device, go to Settings > Devices & Services > ZHA and click Add Device. Home Assistant will begin scanning for devices in pairing mode. Put your Zigbee device into pairing mode (usually by holding a button for several seconds — check the device's manual). The device should appear in the Home Assistant UI within 60 seconds. Give it a friendly name and assign it to an area for easy organization.

Smart Home Integration Tips

  • The SkyConnect supports the Zigbee 3.0 standard, so it works with devices from virtually any Zigbee-compatible brand including Philips Hue bulbs, Aqara sensors, and IKEA TRADFRI products.
  • For Thread/Matter support, the SkyConnect can be flashed with experimental Thread firmware via the Home Assistant web UI, but most users should stick with Zigbee for now.
  • Place the SkyConnect and its extension cable in a central location relative to your Zigbee devices to maximize coverage. Zigbee is a mesh network, so adding mains-powered devices like smart plugs will extend your network's reach.
  • Avoid plugging the SkyConnect directly into USB 3.0 ports without the extension cable, as USB 3.0 generates interference on the 2.4 GHz band that Zigbee uses.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the SkyConnect is not detected, try a different USB port or reboot your Home Assistant host. Ensure no other Zigbee coordinator software (like Zigbee2MQTT) is trying to access the same USB device. If devices fail to pair, move them closer to the dongle during initial pairing, then relocate them afterward. Check the Home Assistant logs under Settings > System > Logs for any ZHA-related error messages that can help diagnose connectivity issues.
