What's in the Box

The IKEA INSPELNING Smart Plug ships with the plug unit and a quick start guide. The INSPELNING is IKEA's newer smart plug, featuring built-in energy monitoring that tracks how much power your connected appliance consumes. It plugs directly into a standard wall outlet and communicates with the IKEA Dirigera hub using the Thread protocol with Matter support. This makes it more responsive than the older Zigbee-based TRADFRI Control Outlet and more compatible with third-party smart home platforms right out of the box.

Prerequisites

Before setting up the INSPELNING, confirm you have:

  • An IKEA Dirigera hub — the INSPELNING requires the Dirigera and is not compatible with the older TRADFRI Gateway due to its Thread protocol
  • The IKEA Home Smart app (version 1.20 or later) installed on your iOS or Android device
  • An available wall outlet near the appliance you want to control
  • The appliance's own power switch set to the "on" position so the smart plug can manage the power supply

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Plug in the INSPELNING. Insert the smart plug into a standard wall outlet. The LED indicator on the plug will light up, showing that it is powered on and ready for pairing. The first time you plug it in, it should automatically enter pairing mode.
  2. Open the IKEA Home Smart app. On the home screen, tap the "+" icon to add a new device. Select "Plug" from the available device categories.
  3. Pair the plug. The app will search for nearby Thread devices and should detect the INSPELNING within seconds. If it is not found, press and hold the button on the side of the plug for about 10 seconds to manually enter pairing mode. The LED will pulse to confirm.
  4. Name and assign the plug. Once paired, give the plug a descriptive name such as "Kitchen Coffee Maker" or "Office Heater" and assign it to the appropriate room in your home layout.
  5. Connect your appliance. Plug the appliance you want to control into the front of the INSPELNING. Make sure the appliance's own switch is in the "on" position.
  6. Test the controls. Toggle the plug on and off through the IKEA Home Smart app to verify everything is connected properly. You should hear a click from the plug's internal relay and see your appliance respond.

Energy Monitoring and Automations

The standout feature of the INSPELNING is its built-in energy monitoring. In the IKEA Home Smart app, navigate to the plug's detail page to see real-time power consumption in watts and cumulative energy usage over time. This helps you identify energy-hungry appliances and track electricity costs. You can also set up daily schedules to automate routines — program the plug to turn on your coffee maker at 6:30 AM on weekdays or schedule holiday lights to activate at sunset. Add the INSPELNING to scenes triggered by shortcut buttons, remotes, or motion sensors for hands-free control.

Smart Home Integration Tips

Thanks to Thread and Matter support, the INSPELNING integrates natively with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa through the Dirigera hub's Matter bridge. Voice commands like "Hey Siri, turn off the space heater" work seamlessly. As a mains-powered Thread device, the INSPELNING strengthens your home's Thread mesh network for better connectivity with nearby Thread devices like the PARASOLL and VALLHORN sensors. Home Assistant users can access the plug including its energy data through the Dirigera integration.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the INSPELNING stops responding, unplug it from the wall for 10 seconds and plug it back in. This resets the Thread radio and usually restores connectivity. If the energy monitoring shows zero even when an appliance is running, confirm the appliance is actually drawing power and that it is plugged securely into the front of the smart plug. For a full factory reset, press and hold the side button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then re-pair through the IKEA Home Smart app. If the plug intermittently disconnects, check that your Dirigera hub firmware is up to date, as Thread stability has improved significantly in recent hub updates.
