What You'll Need
- Innr Smart Plug SP 224
- A Zigbee hub: Philips Hue Bridge, SmartThings Hub, Amazon Echo with built-in Zigbee, or Hubitat
- The app for your chosen hub
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in the Innr SP 224. It should automatically enter pairing mode for about 3 minutes after being powered on.
- Put your hub in pairing mode and add the plug through your hub's app:
- Philips Hue: Open the Hue app, go to Settings, then Accessory setup, and tap "Add accessory." The Hue Bridge searches for Zigbee devices nearby.
- SmartThings: Tap "+" and then "Add device." Select Innr or search under "Other Zigbee" devices.
- Amazon Echo (with Zigbee): Open the Alexa app, go to Devices, tap "+", select "Other," and choose "Zigbee."
- Hubitat: Go to Devices, click "Discover Devices," and select Zigbee.
- Wait for pairing and name the plug when it appears.
Key Features
- Zigbee 3.0 for wide hub compatibility
- Works within the Philips Hue ecosystem
- Compatible with SmartThings, Echo Plus/Show, and Hubitat
- Compact form factor
- LED status indicator
- 16A capacity
- Acts as a Zigbee repeater to extend your mesh network
Philips Hue Integration
The Innr SP 224 is one of the relatively few third-party plugs that works with the Philips Hue Bridge:
- Once paired, the plug appears in the Hue app alongside your Hue bulbs and accessories.
- Include it in Hue scenes to coordinate plug-controlled devices with your lighting.
- Use Hue automations and timers to schedule the plug.
- The plug works through the Hue Bridge, which means it also works with HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Home if your Hue Bridge is linked to those platforms.
- Limitation: Some advanced Hue features may not be available for third-party accessories. Basic on/off, scheduling, and scene participation all work.
Practical Use Cases
- Hue room control: Add a non-smart lamp to your Hue room by plugging it into the Innr plug. When you tell the Hue app or Siri to turn off the "Living Room," the plug-controlled lamp turns off with all the Hue bulbs.
- Zigbee mesh improvement: Place the plug between your hub and distant Zigbee devices. It acts as a repeater, which helps those far-away bulbs and sensors maintain a stable connection.
- Multi-hub flexibility: If you switch hubs in the future, the Zigbee 3.0 standard means the plug will work with most modern Zigbee hubs without replacement.
Troubleshooting
- Hue Bridge not finding the plug: Make sure the plug is in pairing mode (LED blinking). If it was previously paired to another hub, reset it first. Press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes to factory reset.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes in a different pattern. This clears all pairing data so the plug can be added to a new hub.
- Range issues: Position the plug within Zigbee range of your hub (roughly 30 feet indoors). Walls, floors, and interference from other electronics can reduce this. Adding more Zigbee repeaters helps.
- Shows as "Unknown device" on some hubs: The plug may pair but show limited functionality on hubs that do not have a specific device handler for Innr plugs. On SmartThings, try using a generic Zigbee switch handler. On Hubitat, use the "Generic Zigbee Outlet" driver.
