What You'll Need
- Kasa Smart Plug HS110 with Energy Monitoring
- Kasa Smart app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- A TP-Link account
Step-by-Step Setup
- Download the Kasa app and create or sign in to your TP-Link account.
- Plug in the HS110 to a wall outlet. For the most accurate energy readings, plug directly into the wall rather than into a power strip or surge protector.
- Add the plug in the Kasa app:
- Tap the "+" icon and select "Smart Plugs"
- Choose "Plug with Energy Monitoring"
- Confirm the LED is blinking amber and green
- Connect to Wi-Fi by following the app prompts. Your phone will briefly connect to the plug's hotspot, then transfer your home Wi-Fi credentials.
- Complete setup by naming the plug and assigning it to a room.
- View energy data by tapping the plug in the app and selecting the energy tab. It takes a few minutes for initial readings to appear.

Getting the Most from Energy Monitoring
The HS110's energy tracking is one of its strongest features. Here are some practical ways to put it to work:
- Identify power-hungry devices: Plug in different appliances for a week each to see which ones cost the most to run. Many people are surprised by how much old refrigerators, gaming consoles in standby mode, or space heaters draw.
- Laundry cycle alerts: If you pair the HS110 with your washer, you can watch the power curve. When draw drops to near zero, the cycle is finished. Build automations around this in Alexa routines or Google Home.
- Monthly tracking: The app stores historical data, so you can compare month-over-month usage for a specific appliance and spot trends.
Voice Assistant Setup
- Alexa: Enable the "Kasa Smart" skill in the Alexa app and link your TP-Link account. You can turn the plug on/off by voice, but energy data is only viewable in the Kasa app.
- Google Home: Link Kasa through "Works with Google" in the Google Home app. Same story with energy data being app-only.
Troubleshooting
- Energy stats not showing: Give it a few minutes after plugging in a load. If data still does not appear, force close and reopen the Kasa app.
- Inaccurate readings: Plug the HS110 directly into a wall outlet. Power strips and extension cords can introduce measurement errors. Also check that the firmware is up to date through the Kasa app.
- Reset to pairing mode: Press and hold the button for 5 seconds until the LED blinks amber and green.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly. This wipes all settings.
- Plug goes offline after router change: If you changed your Wi-Fi password or router, factory reset the plug and set it up fresh with the new network credentials.
