What You'll Need

  • Kasa Smart Plug HS103
  • Kasa Smart app (iOS or Android)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network (5GHz will not work)
  • A TP-Link account

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Download the Kasa app and sign in or create a TP-Link account.
  2. Plug in the HS103 to any standard outlet. Its compact size means it should not block the second outlet on a duplex receptacle.
  3. Open the Kasa app and tap the "+" button in the top right corner.
  4. Select "Smart Plugs" and then choose "Plug Lite" from the list.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts:
    • Confirm the LED on the plug is blinking amber and green
    • Your phone will connect to the plug's temporary Wi-Fi hotspot
    • Enter your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network name and password
    • Wait for the plug to connect (the LED turns solid green when ready)
  6. Name the plug and assign it to a room. Pick a name that works well with voice commands, like "desk lamp" or "living room fan."

Key Features

  • Compact form factor that does not block adjacent outlets
  • 15A/1800W capacity for most household devices
  • Wi-Fi direct connection with no hub required
  • Alexa and Google Assistant voice control
  • Scheduling, countdown timer, and random away mode
  • Group control to manage multiple plugs at once

Voice Assistant Setup

  • Alexa: Open the Alexa app, go to Skills, search for "Kasa Smart," enable it, and link your TP-Link account. Your plugs appear automatically in the Alexa Devices list.
  • Google Home: In the Google Home app, tap "+" then "Set up device" and choose "Works with Google." Search for Kasa and link your account.

Practical Use Cases

  • Lamp automation: Schedule a table lamp to turn on at sunset and off at bedtime. The away mode can randomize the timing to make it look like someone is home while you travel.
  • Coffee maker timer: Use a countdown timer to turn off a basic drip coffee maker after 2 hours so the warming plate does not stay on all day.
  • Holiday lights: Set a daily schedule for string lights to run during evening hours without manually unplugging them.

Troubleshooting

  • Plug is not entering pairing mode: Press and hold the button on the side for 5 seconds until the LED starts blinking amber and green.
  • Setup fails on 5GHz network: The HS103 only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. If your router combines both bands under one network name, try temporarily disabling the 5GHz band during setup, or check your router settings for a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID.
  • Factory reset: Press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED blinks amber rapidly. This erases all settings and puts the plug back in setup mode.
  • Frequent disconnections: Check the Wi-Fi signal strength at the plug location. If it is weak, move the plug closer to the router, add a Wi-Fi extender, or switch to a mesh network setup. Also check that your router firmware is current.
  • Plug shows offline in app: Power cycle the plug by unplugging for 10 seconds. If that does not help, remove the device from the Kasa app and set it up again.
