What You'll Need
- Kasa Smart Plug Power Strip KP303
- Kasa Smart app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- A TP-Link account
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in the KP303 power strip to a wall outlet.
- Open the Kasa app and tap the "+" button to add a device.
- Select "Power Strip" from the device list.
- Confirm the LED is blinking amber and green, indicating the strip is in pairing mode.
- Connect to Wi-Fi by following the app instructions. Your phone connects to the strip's temporary hotspot, then you enter your home Wi-Fi credentials.
- Name each outlet individually. The KP303 has 3 smart outlets, and each one appears as a separate controllable device in the app. Give them names that make sense for voice commands, like "desk lamp," "monitor," and "speaker."
- Assign the strip to a room to keep things organized.
Key Features
- 3 individually controlled smart outlets
- 2 always-on USB charging ports
- Built-in surge protection
- Individual scheduling for each outlet
- Works with Alexa and Google Assistant
- Group control or individual control from the Kasa app
- Energy monitoring per outlet
Practical Use Cases
- Desk setup: Plug your monitor, desk lamp, and speakers into the three smart outlets. Set up a "Work mode" scene that turns everything on with one voice command, and schedule it all to shut off at the end of the workday.
- Entertainment center: Control your TV, soundbar, and game console independently. Schedule them to power off overnight to cut standby power drain. The USB ports can keep a streaming stick or controller charged.
- Kids room management: Put a TV, game console, and lamp on individual outlets. Set schedules to cut power to entertainment devices at bedtime while leaving the lamp available.
Voice Control Tips
Each outlet shows up as a separate device in Alexa or Google Home once you link your Kasa account. You can also create groups to control all three outlets at once. For example, say "Alexa, turn off the desk" to kill power to all three devices, or "Alexa, turn off the desk lamp" for just one outlet.
Troubleshooting
- Only one outlet showing in the app: All three smart outlets should appear as separate devices under the power strip. Make sure your Kasa app is updated to the latest version. Try removing the strip and re-adding it.
- USB ports not charging: The two USB ports are always-on and not smart controlled. They provide power whenever the strip is plugged in. If they are not working, the strip itself may have an issue.
- Surge protection light is on: If the surge protection indicator light turns red or stays lit, the surge protection circuitry may have been triggered by a power event. Consider replacing the strip, as surge protection components can wear out after absorbing a surge.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the power button for 5 or more seconds until all the LEDs blink. This resets the strip to factory defaults and you will need to set it up again.
- Wi-Fi connection drops: Power strips draw more current than single plugs, and the internal Wi-Fi radio can be affected by nearby electronics. Try repositioning the strip or ensuring your router signal is strong in that area.
