What's in the Box
The Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Power Strip HS300 package includes the power strip unit, a power cable (approximately 3 feet long), and a quick start guide. The HS300 features six individually controllable smart outlets and three USB charging ports. Each of the six outlets can be turned on or off independently through the app or voice commands, and the strip includes built-in surge protection and energy monitoring. No smart home hub is required.
Prerequisites
Before setting up your HS300, make sure you have:
- A wall outlet or surge-protected power source within reach of the 3-foot cord
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network (the HS300 does not support 5 GHz)
- A smartphone with the Kasa Smart app installed (iOS or Android)
- A TP-Link account created within the Kasa app
Step-by-Step Setup
- Place the HS300 in your desired location — behind a TV console, on a desk, or near an entertainment center. Keep it in a well-ventilated spot and avoid covering it with fabric or placing it in enclosed spaces where heat could build up.
- Plug the HS300 into a wall outlet. The power indicator light on the strip will illuminate, and the WiFi LED will begin blinking, indicating the strip is ready for pairing.
- Open the Kasa Smart app, tap the "+" icon, and select "Smart Power Strips." Choose the HS300 from the list.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the strip to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Enter your network password when prompted and wait about 20 to 30 seconds for the connection to complete.
- Once connected, you can name each of the six outlets individually — for example, "TV," "Soundbar," "Game Console," "Lamp," and so on. This makes it easy to control specific devices from the app or by voice.
- Plug your devices into the strip's outlets and USB ports. The USB ports provide power but are not individually controllable through the app.
App Pairing and Configuration
The Kasa app shows all six outlets as separate controls, so you can turn each one on or off independently. The energy monitoring feature tracks power usage for each outlet in real time and provides historical data, making it easy to identify which devices use the most electricity. Set schedules for individual outlets — for example, turn off the game console at bedtime but keep the nightlight on. Countdown timers are useful for devices like phone chargers or fans that you want to run for a set duration. You can also create groups to control multiple outlets with a single tap.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The HS300 works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Each named outlet appears as a separate device in your voice assistant, so you can say "Alexa, turn off the TV" or "Hey Google, turn on the desk lamp" to control individual outlets. Create routines like "Movie Time" that turns on the TV and soundbar outlets while dimming smart bulbs in the room. The HS300 also works with IFTTT, allowing automations such as turning off all outlets when you leave home based on your phone's GPS location.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the HS300 does not appear in the Kasa app during setup, press and hold the reset button on the side of the strip for 5 seconds until the WiFi indicator blinks rapidly. Ensure you are on a 2.4 GHz network during pairing. If individual outlets stop responding, try toggling them from the physical buttons on the strip itself to confirm the outlet is not faulty. If energy monitoring shows no data, give it a few minutes to begin recording, as the initial readings can take a short time to populate. Avoid plugging high-wattage appliances like space heaters or air conditioners into the strip, as these can exceed the surge protector's rated capacity.
