What's in the Box

The Kasa Smart Wi-Fi In-Wall Outlet EP40A package includes the smart in-wall outlet unit, a wall plate, wire nuts, and an installation guide. The EP40A replaces a standard wall outlet and features two individually controllable smart outlets built directly into the wall. It provides a clean, flush appearance without external smart plugs. The EP40A requires a neutral wire in the outlet box and connects directly to WiFi without a hub.

Prerequisites

Before beginning the installation, verify the following:

  • A neutral wire exists in your outlet box (usually a group of white wires connected together)
  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network is available at the outlet location (5 GHz is not supported)
  • The Kasa Smart app is installed on your smartphone
  • A TP-Link account is set up in the Kasa app
  • You have a Phillips-head screwdriver and a non-contact voltage tester
  • You are comfortable working with household wiring, or have a licensed electrician available

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker controlling the outlet you plan to replace. Confirm power is off by testing the outlet with a non-contact voltage tester or by plugging in a device to verify it has no power.
  2. Remove the existing outlet cover plate and unscrew the mounting screws holding the outlet in the box. Gently pull the outlet forward and photograph the wiring before disconnecting anything.
  3. Disconnect all wires from the old outlet. Identify the hot (line) wire (black), neutral wire (white), and ground wire (green or bare copper). If there are additional wires feeding downstream outlets, note their positions.
  4. Wire the EP40A following the included installation guide: connect the black wire to line, white wire to neutral, and green wire to ground. Use the provided wire nuts to secure each connection tightly.
  5. Tuck the wires neatly into the electrical box and screw the EP40A into place. Attach the included wall plate.
  6. Restore power at the breaker. The EP40A's indicator LEDs should light up, confirming it is receiving power.

App Pairing and Configuration

Open the Kasa Smart app, tap the "+" icon, and select the EP40A under "Smart Outlets." Follow the on-screen steps to connect the outlet to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Once paired, both outlets appear individually in the app. Name each outlet based on its use — such as "Table Lamp" and "Phone Charger" — for easy identification. Set independent schedules for each outlet so the lamp turns on at sunset and the charger cuts power overnight to save energy. Countdown timers and Away Mode are also available per outlet for added flexibility and security.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The EP40A integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, with each outlet appearing as a separate controllable device. Use voice commands like "Alexa, turn off the table lamp" or "Hey Google, turn on the charger" to manage individual outlets. Add the EP40A outlets to Alexa routines or Google Home automations for multi-device control — for example, a "Leaving Home" routine that turns off both outlets along with all smart lights. The outlet also supports IFTTT for custom automations triggered by time, location, weather, or other connected services.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the EP40A does not power on, check that the neutral wire is properly connected and the breaker is switched on. A loose neutral connection is the most frequent installation issue. If the outlet has power but will not connect to WiFi, hold the reset button for 5 seconds to restore factory settings and try again. Make sure your phone is on the 2.4 GHz band during setup. If one outlet responds in the app but the other does not, try the physical button on the outlet face to rule out a wiring issue. If both outlets work physically but not through the app, the WiFi connection may have dropped — check your router and reboot the outlet by toggling the breaker off and on.
