What's in the Box
The Kasa Smart Wi-Fi In-Wall Outlet KP200 package includes the in-wall smart outlet unit, a wall plate (faceplate), wire nuts, and an installation guide. The KP200 replaces a standard electrical outlet and provides two independently controllable smart plugs built into the wall. This gives you a clean, flush look without any external smart plugs protruding from the wall. A neutral wire is required in the outlet box for installation. No hub is needed.
Prerequisites
Before starting the installation, confirm the following:
- A neutral wire is present in the outlet box (typically a bundle of white wires connected with a wire nut)
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network is available (the KP200 does not support 5 GHz)
- The Kasa Smart app is installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
- A TP-Link account registered in the Kasa app
- A Phillips-head screwdriver and a non-contact voltage tester
- Basic comfort with electrical wiring, or access to a licensed electrician
Step-by-Step Installation
- Turn off the circuit breaker that powers the outlet you are replacing. Use a non-contact voltage tester to verify there is no power at the outlet before touching any wires.
- Remove the existing outlet cover plate and unscrew the outlet from the electrical box. Gently pull the outlet out and take a photo of the wiring for reference.
- Disconnect the wires from the old outlet. Identify the line (hot) wire, which is typically black, the neutral wire (white), and the ground wire (green or bare copper). If there are additional wires (such as a load wire going to another outlet downstream), note their positions.
- Connect the KP200: attach the black wire from the KP200 to the line wire, the white wire to the neutral bundle, and the green wire to the ground. If your box has a load wire for downstream outlets, connect it as indicated in the KP200 installation guide.
- Carefully push the wires and KP200 unit into the electrical box. Secure it with the mounting screws and attach the included faceplate.
- Turn the breaker back on. The KP200 LEDs should illuminate, indicating it is powered and ready for setup.
App Pairing and Configuration
Open the Kasa Smart app and tap "+" to add a new device. Select the KP200 under "Smart Outlets" and follow the pairing instructions. Once connected, both outlets appear as individually controllable devices in the app. Name each one separately — for example, "Top Outlet" and "Bottom Outlet" or name them after the devices plugged in, like "Lamp" and "Charger." Set schedules, countdown timers, and Away Mode for each outlet independently. This is particularly useful for lamps, fans, or seasonal decorations where you want automated on/off control without visible smart plugs.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The KP200 works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Each outlet appears as its own device in the voice assistant, so you can say "Alexa, turn off the lamp" to control just one outlet. Include the KP200 in smart home routines — a "Goodnight" routine could turn off the bottom outlet (lamp) while keeping the top outlet (phone charger) on. The KP200 also supports IFTTT for advanced automations based on time, location, or triggers from other services.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the KP200 does not power on after installation, double-check the neutral wire connection, as a loose neutral is the most common cause. Verify the breaker is on and test the outlet box with a voltage tester. If the outlet powers on but does not connect to WiFi, press and hold the reset button on the outlet for 5 seconds until the LEDs blink. Ensure you are pairing on a 2.4 GHz network. If one outlet works through the app but the other does not respond, try toggling it with the physical button on the outlet face to confirm it is not a hardware issue.
