What's in the Box

Your Lutron Caseta Wireless Smart Outlet package includes the in-wall smart outlet, a faceplate, wire connectors, mounting screws, and installation instructions. The Caseta smart outlet features a split design with one always-on outlet on top and one smart-controlled outlet on the bottom, allowing you to keep a device like a clock permanently powered while controlling a lamp or other device through the app. It supports resistive loads up to 15A for general use and is rated for lamps, small appliances, and holiday lighting.

Prerequisites

Before you begin installation, make sure you have:

  • A Lutron Caseta Smart Bridge set up and connected to your network
  • The Lutron Caseta app downloaded on your phone
  • A Phillips-head screwdriver, a flathead screwdriver, and a non-contact voltage tester
  • Access to your home's circuit breaker panel

Unlike Caseta switches and dimmers, the smart outlet requires a neutral wire in the junction box. Most standard outlet boxes have neutral wires, so this is typically not an issue. The outlet replaces a standard duplex receptacle and fits in a single-gang electrical box.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker controlling the outlet you plan to replace. Use the voltage tester on the existing outlet to confirm that power is completely off.
  2. Remove the faceplate and unscrew the existing outlet from the electrical box. Carefully pull the outlet forward and note the wiring: a black (hot) wire, a white (neutral) wire, and a bare copper or green ground wire.
  3. Disconnect all wires from the old outlet. If multiple sets of wires are present (indicating the outlet is part of a chain), take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting.
  4. Connect the Caseta outlet's green wire to the ground wire. Connect the black wire to the hot (line) wire and the white wire to the neutral wire bundle using the included wire connectors.
  5. Carefully push the wires and outlet into the electrical box and secure it with the mounting screws. Make sure the smart-controlled outlet (marked with an indicator) is on the bottom.
  6. Attach the included faceplate and turn the circuit breaker back on. The LED indicator on the outlet should illuminate.

App Pairing

Open the Lutron Caseta app and tap "Add Device." Select "Smart Outlet" from the available device types. When prompted, press the button on the side of the outlet to enter pairing mode. The Smart Bridge detects the outlet using Clear Connect RF technology and adds it to your system. Name the outlet descriptively, such as "Living Room Lamp Outlet," and assign it to the correct room. Only the smart-controlled bottom outlet responds to app commands. The top outlet remains always on and is not controllable through the app or bridge.

Smart Home Integration Tips

Once paired, the smart outlet works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit through the Caseta bridge. This makes it ideal for controlling table lamps and floor lamps with voice commands. Set up schedules in the Caseta app to automatically turn the lamp on at sunset and off at bedtime. You can also pair a Pico remote with the outlet for physical control from across the room. The Caseta app's "Smart Away" mode can randomize the outlet's schedule to make it appear someone is home while you are traveling.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the smart outlet does not power on after installation, verify that the neutral wire is properly connected. Without a solid neutral connection, the outlet cannot function. If the outlet powers on but the smart-controlled plug does not respond, make sure you are plugging your device into the correct (bottom) outlet. For pairing issues, ensure the Smart Bridge is online and within range. Factory reset the outlet by pressing and holding the side button for 10 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly, then try pairing again.
