Understanding the Panic Button

The Ring Alarm Panic Button is a small, portable device that lets you trigger an emergency alarm with a single press. When activated, it sends an immediate alert through the Ring app and can trigger your Ring Alarm siren. If you have a Ring Protect Pro subscription with professional monitoring, pressing the panic button dispatches emergency services to your home.

Step 1: Prepare the Panic Button

  1. Remove the Panic Button from its packaging.
  2. Pull the plastic battery tab to activate the pre-installed battery.
  3. The LED on the button will flash briefly, confirming the device has power.

Step 2: Add the Panic Button in the Ring App

  1. Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
  2. Select Security Devices, then choose Panic Button.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, press the small pairing button on the back of the Panic Button.
  4. The Ring Alarm Base Station will discover the device via Z-Wave. This typically takes 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Once paired, name the Panic Button and assign it to a location (e.g., "Bedroom," "Office," or "Portable").

Step 3: Choose a Location

The Panic Button is designed to be kept wherever you might need quick access to an emergency alarm. You have two options:

  • Portable — Keep the Panic Button on a nightstand, desk, kitchen counter, or carry it with you around the home. Its small size makes it easy to move wherever you go.
  • Wall-mounted — Use the included adhesive strip to mount the button on a wall in a fixed location, such as beside your bed, near a front door, or in a home office.

Step 4: Test the Panic Button

  1. Before relying on the Panic Button in an emergency, test it to ensure proper operation.
  2. In the Ring app, go to Devices and select the Panic Button.
  3. Make sure all household members know you are testing so they are not alarmed.
  4. If you have professional monitoring, call the monitoring station before testing to let them know it is a test, so they do not dispatch emergency services.
  5. Press and hold the Panic Button. The Ring Alarm will trigger, and you should receive notifications on your phone.
  6. Disarm the alarm from the Ring app or the Ring Alarm Keypad using your access code.

Step 5: Configure Emergency Settings

  • Alarm Type — In the Ring app, configure whether the Panic Button triggers a police or fire/medical emergency response (for professional monitoring subscribers).
  • Siren Behavior — Choose whether the Ring Alarm Base Station siren sounds when the Panic Button is pressed.
  • Notifications — Ensure all household members' phones are set to receive alarm notifications.
  • Emergency Contacts — Verify your emergency contact information is up to date in the Ring app.

Tips for Best Performance

  • The Panic Button requires a deliberate press and hold to activate, which prevents accidental triggers.
  • The battery typically lasts up to three years. Replace it when the Ring app alerts you to a low battery condition.
  • Keep the Panic Button within Z-Wave range of the Base Station (up to 250 feet in open air). If you plan to use it in a distant part of your home, add a Ring Alarm Range Extender to strengthen the signal.
  • Consider placing one Panic Button in the bedroom for nighttime emergencies and another in a common area for daytime access.
  • Teach all household members, including older children, how and when to use the Panic Button.
