What You'll Need

  • Shelly Plus Plug US
  • Shelly app (iOS or Android)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
  • Bluetooth enabled on your phone for setup

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Plug in the Shelly Plus Plug. The LED will indicate it is powered on and ready for setup.
  2. Download the Shelly app if you have not already.
  3. Enable Bluetooth on your phone. The Plus generation uses Bluetooth for setup, which is simpler than the original AP-based method.
  4. Add the device via Bluetooth:
    • Tap "+" in the Shelly app
    • The app discovers the plug over Bluetooth automatically
    • Select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password
  5. Wait for the connection to complete, then name the device.

Key Features

  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi setup (much easier than the original Shelly Plug)
  • ESP32 chip for faster processing and better Wi-Fi reliability
  • Built-in power monitoring showing watts, kWh, voltage, and current
  • 15A capacity
  • Local API and MQTT support
  • Home Assistant native integration
  • Matter support via firmware update
  • Scripting capabilities for custom on-device automations

Matter Support

The Shelly Plus Plug can be updated to support Matter, which opens up cross-platform compatibility:

  • Check the Shelly website or app for the latest firmware that includes Matter support.
  • Once updated, you can add the plug to Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, or any Matter controller.
  • Matter works alongside the existing Shelly app and local API, so you do not lose any existing functionality.
  • Note that Matter support may require a specific firmware version. Check the Shelly documentation for your exact model.

Scripting and Advanced Automation

The Plus generation of Shelly devices includes a scripting engine that runs directly on the plug:

  • Write scripts in a JavaScript-like language to create custom automation logic.
  • Scripts run locally on the device, so they work even without Wi-Fi or cloud access.
  • Example uses: automatically turn off the plug if power consumption exceeds a threshold, create complex scheduling patterns, or trigger actions based on voltage readings.
  • Access the script editor through the device's web interface.

Troubleshooting

  • Bluetooth not finding the plug: Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and that you are standing close to the plug (within about 5 feet). Try closing and reopening the Shelly app.
  • Fallback to AP mode: If Bluetooth setup fails, reset the plug and it will create a Wi-Fi access point named "ShellyPlusPlugUS-XXXX." Connect to that AP from your phone and complete setup through the web interface or app.
  • Matter not available: Check for firmware updates in the Shelly app or via the web interface. Matter support requires a specific firmware version that may need to be installed manually.
  • Factory reset: Press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED indicates a reset. The plug clears all settings and is ready for fresh setup.
  • Power monitoring inaccurate: Plug directly into a wall outlet for best results. Very low-power devices (under 5W) may show slightly off readings due to the limits of the metering circuitry.
  • Web interface: Access the plug's built-in dashboard by entering its IP address in any browser on the same network. You can find the IP in the Shelly app or in your router's device list.
