What's in the Box

The Tapo P100 Mini Smart Plug package includes one compact smart plug and a quick start guide. The P100 features a slim, rounded design that fits neatly into a standard wall outlet without blocking adjacent sockets. It provides on/off control for any device plugged into it and connects to your home WiFi network without requiring a separate hub or bridge. The P100 is part of TP-Link's Tapo product line and uses the Tapo app rather than the Kasa app.

Prerequisites

Before you begin setup, make sure you have the following:

  • A standard grounded wall outlet
  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network (the P100 does not support 5 GHz bands)
  • A smartphone with the Tapo app installed (available on iOS and Android)
  • A TP-Link ID, which you can create for free within the Tapo app

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Plug the Tapo P100 into a standard wall outlet. The LED indicator on the plug will begin blinking green and amber, indicating it is in pairing mode.
  2. Open the Tapo app on your smartphone and tap the "+" icon to add a new device. Select "Smart Plugs" and choose the P100 from the list.
  3. The app will prompt you to confirm the LED is blinking. Tap to continue, and the app will search for the plug's temporary WiFi signal.
  4. On some phones, you may need to manually connect to the plug's WiFi hotspot in your phone's WiFi settings if the app does not detect it automatically. Look for a network name starting with "Tapo_SmartPlug."
  5. Once connected to the plug, the app will ask you to select your home 2.4 GHz WiFi network and enter the password. The plug will take about 15 to 30 seconds to connect.
  6. Name the plug based on its intended use — "Night Light," "Coffee Maker," "Space Heater" — and assign it to a room in the app.

App Pairing and Configuration

The Tapo app provides straightforward controls for the P100. Toggle the plug on and off from anywhere using the main screen. Create daily or weekly schedules so devices turn on and off automatically — for example, a lamp that switches on at sunset and off at midnight. Use countdown timers to set the plug to turn off after a specified duration, which is helpful for devices like electric blankets or chargers that should not run all night. The "Away Mode" randomly toggles the plug throughout the day to make it appear someone is home while you are away. You can also group multiple Tapo plugs for simultaneous control.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The P100 works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control. Open the Alexa app, search for the "Tapo" skill, and link your TP-Link account. For Google, add the Tapo integration in the Google Home app under "Works with Google." Once linked, use commands like "Alexa, turn on the night light" or "Hey Google, turn off the coffee maker." Add the plug to voice assistant routines for multi-device automation — a "Bedtime" routine could turn off the P100-controlled lamp, lock the smart door lock, and set the thermostat to sleep mode. Note that the P100 uses the Tapo ecosystem, so it will not appear in the Kasa app alongside any Kasa devices you may own.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the P100 does not enter pairing mode when plugged in, press and hold the power button on the plug for about 5 seconds until the LED blinks green and amber. If the plug does not appear during setup, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone, as the Tapo app may use Bluetooth for initial device discovery. If the plug connects but drops offline periodically, check the WiFi signal strength at the outlet location. The P100's compact design has a smaller internal antenna, so it may struggle at the outer edges of your WiFi coverage. A mesh WiFi node or range extender near the plug can resolve this. If the plug becomes completely unresponsive, unplug it for 10 seconds, plug it back in, and try pairing again from scratch.
