What You'll Need
- Third Reality Zigbee Smart Plug
- Zigbee hub: SmartThings, Hubitat, Amazon Echo with built-in Zigbee, or Home Assistant with a Zigbee coordinator
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in the Third Reality Smart Plug. The LED will light up to confirm power.
- Put your hub in pairing mode:
- SmartThings: Tap "+" then "Add device" and select Zigbee
- Hubitat: Go to Devices and click "Discover Devices" under Zigbee
- Amazon Echo: Open the Alexa app, go to Devices, tap "+", select "Other," then "Zigbee"
- Home Assistant: Go to the Zigbee integration and start pairing mode
- Press and hold the button on the plug for 5 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly. This puts it in pairing mode.
- Wait for your hub to discover the device.
- Confirm pairing in your hub's app and name the device.

Zigbee Mesh Network Benefits
Every Third Reality plug you add to your network strengthens the Zigbee mesh:
- Mains-powered Zigbee devices like smart plugs act as routers, relaying messages between your hub and more distant devices.
- Battery-powered sensors and door/window contacts benefit the most from a strong mesh because they have limited transmission power.
- Place smart plugs between your hub and problem devices to create a reliable signal path.
- The more Zigbee routers you have, the more resilient your network becomes if any single device loses connection.
Practical Use Cases
- Affordable mesh building: Third Reality plugs are competitively priced, making them a cost-effective way to fill gaps in your Zigbee mesh while also gaining smart outlet control.
- Simple automation triggers: Pair with motion sensors to turn on lights when you walk into a room, or with door sensors to activate devices when you come home.
- Appliance scheduling: Use your hub's scheduling features for timed control of lamps, fans, or other basic appliances.
Troubleshooting
- Not entering pairing mode: Press and hold the button for at least 5 seconds until you see a rapid LED flash. If the plug was previously paired to a different hub, you need to factory reset it first.
- Hub does not discover the plug: Move the plug closer to the hub for initial pairing. After it is paired, you can move it to its final location and the Zigbee mesh will adapt.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes in a different pattern. This clears the Zigbee network information.
- Echo Zigbee pairing: Use the Alexa app path: Devices, "+", Other, Zigbee. The plug should appear within 60 seconds. If not, reset the plug and try again while standing close to the Echo device.
- Zigbee channel conflict: If the plug frequently drops off the network, your Zigbee channel might overlap with your Wi-Fi channel. Zigbee channels 15, 20, and 25 have the least Wi-Fi interference. You can change the Zigbee channel in your hub's settings, but this requires re-pairing all Zigbee devices.
