What You'll Need
- Tovala Smart Oven Pro
- Smartphone with the Tovala app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Countertop space with at least 5 inches of clearance on all sides
- Dedicated wall outlet (do not use an extension cord)
Step 1: Position the Oven
Place on a stable, heat-resistant countertop with clearance on all sides for ventilation. Do not place it under overhead cabinets -- the steam vent on top will cause moisture damage over time.
Step 2: Download the Tovala App
Install the app and create your account. The app is essential -- it sends cook programs to the oven and gives you access to the recipe library.
Step 3: Connect Power and Wi-Fi
Plug directly into a wall outlet. Open the Tovala app and follow the prompts to pair the oven and connect to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (5GHz is not supported).
Step 4: Fill the Water Tank
Fill the side reservoir with fresh water before first use. Steam keeps food moist while the other elements handle browning. Refill when the app reminds you.
Step 5: Run a Test Cycle
The app may prompt a test cook during setup. This burns off manufacturing residue. A slight smell during this first run is normal.
Cooking Modes
- Scan-to-Cook: Scan the barcode on Tovala meals or supported grocery store products and the oven runs the right combination of steam, bake, and broil automatically.
- Steam: Great for vegetables, fish, and reheating leftovers without drying them out.
- Bake: Standard baking up to 450 degrees for casseroles, cookies, and more.
- Broil: Top-down heat for browning, melting cheese, or crisping.
- Toast: Basic toasting for bread and bagels.
- Reheat: Combines gentle steam with low heat. Honestly one of the most useful modes -- leftovers come out way better than a microwave.
Tips
- The app has thousands of scan-to-cook programs including common grocery store items. Search by brand name to check if your favorites are supported.
- You can build custom multi-step programs in the app (e.g., steam at 350 for 5 minutes, then broil for 2) and send them to the oven.
- The Tovala meal subscription is optional. The oven works perfectly fine without it.
Note: The Tovala does not integrate with Alexa, Google Home, or other smart home platforms. All control goes through the Tovala app.
Troubleshooting
- Barcode not scanning: Hold your phone steady about 6 inches away. If it will not scan, enter the meal code manually -- it is printed near the barcode.
- Wi-Fi disconnects: Only 2.4GHz is supported. If your router combines bands, try assigning a separate 2.4GHz network name in router settings.
- Uneven cooking: Center the food on the tray and use the rack position the app recommends. Do not overcrowd -- air needs to circulate.
- Steam not working: Check the water tank is full and seated properly. Use regular tap water, not distilled.
- Oven shows "offline": Unplug for 30 seconds and plug back in. Physical controls still work offline, but you lose scan-to-cook.
