What's in the Box

The TP-Link Tapo P125M Matter Smart Plug package includes one compact smart plug and a quick start guide. The P125M is a Matter-enabled device, meaning it works natively with any Matter-compatible smart home platform including Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. The plug uses WiFi for connectivity and does not require a separate hub or bridge. Its compact form factor is designed to leave adjacent outlets accessible.

Prerequisites

Before starting setup, confirm you have:

  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network (the P125M connects via WiFi, not Thread)
  • A Matter-compatible controller such as an Apple HomePod, Amazon Echo (4th gen or later), Google Nest Hub (2nd gen or later), or Samsung SmartThings hub
  • A smartphone with the Tapo app installed, or the native smart home app for your chosen platform
  • A TP-Link ID if setting up through the Tapo app

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Plug the P125M into a standard wall outlet. The LED on the plug will begin blinking to indicate it is in pairing mode and ready for setup.
  2. You have two setup options: use the Tapo app for a traditional TP-Link setup, or use a Matter-compatible app (Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings) to add the plug directly via Matter.
  3. For Tapo app setup: open the app, tap "+," select "Smart Plugs," and choose the P125M. Follow the prompts to connect it to your WiFi network. After setup, you can share it to other Matter platforms from the Tapo app settings.
  4. For direct Matter setup: open your preferred smart home app (such as Apple Home), select "Add Accessory," and scan the Matter QR code printed on the plug or in the quick start guide. The app will discover the plug over your local network and add it.
  5. Once added, name the plug and assign it to a room. If you set it up through the Tapo app first, you can commission it to additional Matter platforms using the "Matter" option in the plug's device settings.

App Pairing and Configuration

If you use the Tapo app as the primary controller, you get access to Tapo-specific features including detailed scheduling, countdown timers, and Away Mode. Through Matter-compatible apps, you get basic on/off control, scheduling, and the ability to include the plug in automations native to that platform. For example, in Apple Home you can add the plug to HomeKit scenes and automations, while in Google Home you can include it in routines. The Matter integration means you can control the plug from multiple platforms simultaneously — it can be in Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa all at the same time.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The biggest advantage of Matter is cross-platform compatibility. Unlike standard Tapo plugs that require specific skill linking, the P125M shows up natively in any Matter controller. Apple HomeKit users can control the plug through Siri and the Home app for the first time with a Tapo device. Create automations such as turning the plug off when you leave home using your iPhone's location, or triggering it with a Google Home routine. If you have a mixed smart home with devices across multiple ecosystems, the P125M bridges them seamlessly. Multi-admin support means your entire household can control the plug from their preferred app without conflicts.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the plug does not enter pairing mode, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly. If Matter pairing fails, ensure your Matter controller's firmware is up to date, as Matter is still a relatively new standard and updates frequently improve compatibility. Make sure your phone and the Matter controller are on the same WiFi network as the plug. If the QR code does not scan, try entering the numeric pairing code printed below the QR code manually. If the plug connects through one platform but not another, check that multi-admin is enabled in the primary controller's settings before attempting to commission to a second platform.
