HomeKit and Apple Ecosystem

The PM5 is a strong option for Apple-heavy households because of its native HomeKit support:

  • Siri control: "Hey Siri, turn off the desk lamp" or "Hey Siri, is the fan on?" works immediately after setup.
  • HomeKit automations: Set the plug to turn on when you arrive home, turn off when you leave, or run on a time-based schedule. All automations run locally through your Apple TV or HomePod home hub.
  • HomeKit scenes: Include the plug in scenes like "Good Morning" or "Good Night" alongside other HomeKit accessories.
  • Control from anywhere: With an Apple TV or HomePod acting as a home hub, you can control the plug remotely from your iPhone even when away from home.

Energy Monitoring

The PM5 includes energy tracking that is accessible through the VOCOlinc app:

  • View real-time wattage for connected devices.
  • Track daily and monthly consumption to understand your electricity costs.
  • Note: Energy data is available in the VOCOlinc app. The Apple Home app shows on/off status but does not display energy information.

Practical Use Cases

  • HomeKit lamp control: Use the PM5 to bring any non-smart lamp into your HomeKit setup. Control it alongside HomeKit-compatible bulbs and switches.
  • Cross-platform flexibility: Even though it is HomeKit-native, the PM5 also works with Alexa and Google Home. Good for households where not everyone uses Apple.
  • Siri shortcuts: Build Apple Shortcuts automations that include the PM5 for more complex scenarios, like turning on the plug when an NFC tag is tapped.

Troubleshooting

  • HomeKit code will not scan: Try manual code entry in the Home app. The 8-digit code is printed on the plug and also included in the box. Make sure your camera is in focus and the code is well-lit.
  • 5GHz Wi-Fi not supported: The PM5 only works on 2.4GHz networks. If your router combines both bands, try temporarily disabling 5GHz during setup or creating a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID.
  • "No Response" in Apple Home: Check that the plug has Wi-Fi connectivity. Power cycle it by unplugging for 10 seconds. If the issue persists, check that your Apple TV or HomePod home hub is online and connected to the same network.
  • Factory reset: Press and hold the button until the LED flashes rapidly. Remove the accessory from the Home app, then re-add it with the HomeKit code.
  • Energy data not visible: Energy monitoring data is only available in the VOCOlinc app, not in Apple Home. Download the VOCOlinc app for energy tracking features.
