What You'll Need

  • Wemo Mini Smart Plug
  • Wemo app (iOS or Android)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Download the Wemo app and create an account if you do not have one yet.
  2. Plug in the Wemo Mini. The Wi-Fi indicator light should start blinking amber and white, meaning the plug is in setup mode. If the light is solid, the plug may have been set up before and needs a reset.
  3. Open the Wemo app and tap "Add Device."
  4. Select "Wemo Mini" from the device list.
  5. Connect to the Wemo's temporary Wi-Fi when the app prompts you. Your phone will briefly switch to the plug's hotspot network.
  6. Enter your home Wi-Fi credentials so the plug can join your network.
  7. Wait for setup to finish. The indicator light turns solid white when the plug is connected and ready.
  8. Name your plug with something that works well for voice commands.

Key Features

  • Compact design that leaves the second outlet free
  • Works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit
  • No hub required for any platform
  • Scheduling, countdown timers, and Away Mode
  • Physical button on the front for manual on/off
  • Status LED indicator shows connection state

HomeKit Integration

The Wemo Mini supports Apple HomeKit natively, which makes it a strong choice for Apple households. To add it to HomeKit:

  • Open the Apple Home app, tap "+", and select "Add Accessory."
  • Scan the HomeKit code printed on the side of the plug or in the packaging.
  • The plug pairs directly into HomeKit and works with Siri, HomeKit automations, and scenes.
  • Once in HomeKit, the plug works locally through your Apple TV or HomePod home hub, so it responds even if the internet goes down.

Practical Use Cases

  • Multi-platform home: Because the Wemo Mini works with Alexa, Google, and HomeKit simultaneously, it is a good choice if different family members prefer different voice assistants.
  • Away Mode for security: The Away Mode feature randomizes on/off times to make it look like someone is home. This works well on a living room lamp when you travel.
  • Simple lamp control: The compact form factor and reliable HomeKit support make this a popular choice for controlling table lamps and floor lamps with Siri.

Troubleshooting

  • App does not discover the plug: Press and hold the button on the front for 5 seconds until the LED starts blinking amber and white. This puts the plug back into setup mode.
  • Solid orange light: The plug is not connected to Wi-Fi. Double check that your Wi-Fi password was entered correctly. If you recently changed your router password, you will need to reset the plug and set it up again.
  • Factory reset: Press and hold the button until the LED starts flashing rapidly in an amber pattern. Release the button and the plug resets to factory defaults.
  • HomeKit problems: If the plug shows "No Response" in the Home app, try power cycling it by unplugging for 10 seconds. If that does not help, remove it from HomeKit, factory reset the plug, and re-add it using the HomeKit code.
  • Firmware updates: Open the Wemo app and check for firmware updates in the plug's settings. Wemo pushes updates that fix bugs and improve HomeKit stability. Always run the latest firmware.
