What You'll Need

  • Wemo Outdoor Smart Plug
  • Wemo app (iOS or Android)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
  • Outdoor GFCI-protected outlet

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Plug into an outdoor GFCI outlet. Test the GFCI first by pressing the test button to confirm it trips, then press reset to restore power.
  2. Open the Wemo app and tap "Add a Wemo."
  3. Select the outdoor plug from the device list.
  4. Wait for the LED to indicate pairing mode (blinking amber and white).
  5. Connect to Wi-Fi by following the on-screen prompts and entering your 2.4GHz network credentials.
  6. Name each outlet. The Wemo Outdoor Plug has two independently controlled outlets, so give each a descriptive name like "porch lights" and "garden fountain."

Key Features

  • Weather-resistant design built for outdoor use
  • Two independently controlled outlets
  • Works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit
  • Sunrise/sunset scheduling that adjusts with the seasons
  • 15A per outlet
  • Manual buttons on each outlet for local control

HomeKit for Outdoor Automation

HomeKit support makes this plug especially useful for location-based automations:

  • Set up a "When I arrive home" automation to turn on porch lights as you pull into the driveway.
  • Create a "When I leave" automation to shut off all outdoor devices.
  • Use HomeKit scenes to set different lighting configurations for entertaining versus everyday use.
  • Combine with other HomeKit accessories for comprehensive outdoor control from one app.

Practical Outdoor Use Cases

  • Landscape lighting: Run pathway lights on one outlet with sunset-to-midnight scheduling, and accent lights on the other outlet that turn off earlier.
  • Pool and patio: Control a pool pump timer on one outlet and patio string lights on the other, each with their own schedule.
  • Holiday decorations: Independently schedule different sets of holiday decorations. Wemo's Away Mode also works on outdoor plugs for randomized timing.

Outdoor Installation Tips

  • Position the plug under an eave or in a covered outlet box whenever possible for extra moisture protection.
  • Use the weatherproof outlet covers on any unused ports.
  • Check that the total load on each outlet stays within the 15A rating. Holiday light strings can add up quickly.
  • Periodically inspect outdoor connections for corrosion or moisture buildup, especially after storms.

Troubleshooting

  • Weak outdoor Wi-Fi signal: Outdoor outlets are often at the edge of your router's range. Add a Wi-Fi extender near an interior wall closest to the outdoor outlet, or upgrade to a mesh system with an outdoor node.
  • GFCI keeps tripping: This usually indicates moisture in the connection or an overloaded circuit. Check that all cord connections are dry and tight. Reduce the connected load if needed.
  • One outlet not working: Each outlet pairs separately in the app. If one is missing, remove the plug from the app and re-add it. Both outlets should appear as separate controllable devices.
  • Factory reset: Press and hold both outlet buttons simultaneously until the LEDs flash in a reset pattern. This clears all settings for both outlets.
  • Plug stops responding in rain: While the plug is weather-resistant, heavy direct rain can sometimes cause temporary issues. Make sure the outlet cover is properly seated and check connections when the weather clears.
