What You'll Need
- Wemo WiFi Smart Plug (WSP080)
- Wemo app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Bluetooth enabled on your phone for initial setup
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in the Wemo Smart Plug. Wait for the LED to start blinking amber and white, which means the plug is ready for setup.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on on your phone. The WSP080 uses Bluetooth for the initial discovery phase, then switches to Wi-Fi for ongoing communication.
- Open the Wemo app:
- Sign in or create a Wemo/Belkin account
- Tap "Add a Wemo"
- Follow the setup wizard:
- The app discovers the plug over Bluetooth
- Enter your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network name and password
- Wait for the plug to connect to your network
- Name and customize the plug's settings. Choose a clear name for voice control.

Thread Connectivity
The WSP080 supports Thread, a mesh networking protocol used by Apple HomeKit and Matter. Here is what that means for you:
- What Thread does: Thread creates a low-power mesh network between compatible devices. Each Thread device can relay data for other Thread devices, improving range and reliability.
- Thread border router required: You need at least one Thread border router on your network. Apple TV 4K (2nd gen or later) and HomePod mini both function as Thread border routers.
- Benefits: Thread connections are faster and more reliable than Bluetooth, and they work locally without internet. If one device loses connection, Thread routes around it through other mesh nodes.
- Fallback: If you do not have a Thread border router, the plug still works fine over Wi-Fi.
Troubleshooting
- Blinking orange light: The Wi-Fi connection failed. Verify your password is correct and that you are connecting to a 2.4GHz network, not a 5GHz one.
- Thread not connecting: Make sure you have a Thread border router on your network (Apple TV 4K 2nd gen+, HomePod mini). Check that the border router is powered on and connected to your network.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the button on the plug for 5 or more seconds until the LED flashes in a reset pattern. This clears all settings including HomeKit and Thread pairing.
- App cannot find the plug during setup: Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and that you are standing close to the plug (within about 3 feet). If Bluetooth discovery fails, try closing and reopening the app.
- Plug shows "No Response" in HomeKit: Power cycle the plug. If Thread is not available, the plug falls back to Wi-Fi, which can be slower. Adding a Thread border router near the plug often resolves persistent HomeKit responsiveness issues.
- Firmware updates: Check the Wemo app for firmware updates. These updates can improve Thread stability and HomeKit performance. Run them whenever available.
