What You'll Need
- Wyze Plug Outdoor
- Wyze app (iOS or Android)
- Wyze account
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Outdoor GFCI-protected outlet
Step-by-Step Setup
- Download the Wyze app if you have not already, and sign in to your account.
- Plug into an outdoor GFCI-protected outlet. Building codes require GFCI protection for outdoor outlets, so verify yours has a test/reset button on the receptacle or is protected by a GFCI breaker.
- Add the device in the Wyze app:
- Tap "+" and then "Add Device"
- Select "Plugs" and choose "Wyze Plug Outdoor"
- Wait for the LED to blink, indicating the plug is in pairing mode. If it does not start blinking on its own, press and hold the button until it does.
- Connect to Wi-Fi by entering your 2.4GHz network credentials when the app prompts you.
- Name each outlet. The Wyze Plug Outdoor has two independently controlled outlets, so you can give each one a different name like "patio lights" and "fountain."
Key Features
- IP64 weather-resistant rating for rain, snow, and dust
- Two independently controlled outlets
- 15A total capacity shared between both outlets
- Works with Alexa and Google Assistant
- Sunrise/sunset scheduling based on your location
- Individual outlet control and scheduling
Practical Outdoor Use Cases
- Landscape lighting: Put path lights or garden spotlights on one outlet with a sunset-to-11pm schedule, and decorative string lights on the other outlet with a different schedule.
- Holiday decorations: Run Christmas lights on one outlet and an inflatable on the other. Set independent schedules so inflatables deflate at bedtime while lights stay on later.
- Water features: Control a fountain pump on a schedule so it runs during the day and shuts off at night to save electricity and reduce noise.
Outdoor Installation Tips
- Use the included weatherproof covers on any unused outlets to keep moisture out.
- Position the plug so the outlet covers face downward when possible to help shed water.
- Even though the plug is IP64 rated, avoid submerging it or placing it where standing water can pool around it.
- Total load across both outlets should not exceed 15A. Check the wattage rating of your connected devices.
Troubleshooting
- Weak outdoor Wi-Fi: Outdoor outlets are often far from the router. Add a mesh node, Wi-Fi extender, or outdoor access point near the plug's location. Thick exterior walls can cut signal strength dramatically.
- GFCI keeps tripping: This usually means the circuit is overloaded or there is moisture getting into a connection. Reduce the connected load and check that all cord connections are dry and properly sealed.
- Only one outlet showing in the app: Both outlets should appear as separate devices after setup. If only one shows, remove the plug from the app and set it up again. Make sure the Wyze app is updated to the latest version.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the button until the LED flashes rapidly, then release. The plug will restart in pairing mode and you can add it fresh.
- Plug stops responding in cold weather: Extreme cold can affect Wi-Fi performance. The IP64 rating covers water resistance but not extreme temperature operation. If temperatures regularly drop below 14F (-10C), consider bringing the plug indoors during the off-season.
