What You'll Need
- Zooz ZEN04 Z-Wave Plus Smart Plug
- Z-Wave smart home hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant with Z-Wave stick, etc.)
- Standard 120V outlet
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in the ZEN04 to any standard outlet. The LED lights up to confirm power.
- Put your hub in inclusion mode. This is usually found in the Z-Wave settings of your hub's app or web interface.
- Click the button on the ZEN04 once. The LED blinks while pairing is in progress.
- Wait for your hub to confirm that the device has been paired successfully.
- Configure device parameters through your hub's Z-Wave device settings. The ZEN04 has several configurable parameters for LED behavior, power-on state, and more.
Key Features
- Z-Wave Plus 700 series chip with improved range and efficiency
- SmartStart and S2 security for encrypted, easy pairing
- Compact design that does not block adjacent outlets
- Manual on/off button for local control
- Configurable LED status indicator
- Works as a Z-Wave signal repeater
- 15A/1800W capacity
SmartStart Pairing
The ZEN04 supports SmartStart for the easiest possible pairing experience:
- Find the SmartStart QR code on the plug or packaging.
- Scan it with your hub's SmartStart feature before plugging in the device.
- When you plug in the ZEN04, it automatically and securely pairs to your hub without pressing any buttons.
- SmartStart also handles S2 security automatically, so communication between the plug and hub is encrypted.
Configuration Parameters
The ZEN04 has several parameters you can adjust through your hub:
- LED indicator: Choose whether the LED is on when the plug is on, when it is off, or always off. Useful for bedrooms where a bright LED is distracting.
- Power restore state: Set what happens after a power outage. Options are typically: restore previous state, always on, or always off.
- Auto-off timer: Configure the plug to automatically turn off after a set number of minutes. Good for safety with appliances you do not want left on.
Practical Use Cases
- Z-Wave mesh building: The ZEN04 doubles as a Z-Wave repeater. Every plug you add strengthens the network for battery-powered sensors and locks that have shorter range.
- Hub-based automations: Since Z-Wave devices work through your hub, you can build complex automations that combine the ZEN04 with motion sensors, door locks, and other Z-Wave devices for coordinated responses.
- Bedroom-friendly: Configure the LED to stay off or dim so it does not light up the room at night.
Troubleshooting
- Will not include: Exclude the device first. Put your hub in exclusion mode, press the ZEN04 button, and then retry inclusion. This clears any stale pairing data.
- SmartStart QR code: If your hub supports SmartStart, scanning the QR code is the fastest and most reliable way to pair. Available on SmartThings, Hubitat, and Home Assistant.
- Factory reset: Click the button 5 times rapidly, then press and hold until the LED flashes in a reset pattern. This clears all Z-Wave network info.
- LED too bright: Configure the LED behavior through your hub's device parameters. You can turn it off entirely or change when it illuminates.
- Firmware updates: Check the Zooz website for firmware updates. Hubitat and Home Assistant both support Z-Wave OTA firmware updates for compatible devices.
