What You'll Need
- Zooz ZEN15 Z-Wave Plus Power Switch
- Z-Wave smart home hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant with Z-Wave stick, etc.)
- Standard 120V outlet with at least 15A capacity
- The device you want to monitor and control
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in the ZEN15 to a 120V outlet. The LED indicator will turn on to confirm power.
- Plug your device into the ZEN15 outlet. This plug handles up to 15A, so it works well with space heaters, window AC units, aquarium equipment, and other high-draw appliances.
- Add to your Z-Wave hub:
- Put your hub into inclusion mode (the exact steps vary by hub)
- Click the Z-Wave button on the ZEN15 once
- The LED flashes while pairing is in progress
- Your hub confirms the device once pairing completes
- Configure power reporting in your hub's device settings. You will want to adjust the wattage reporting threshold (parameter 151) and the reporting frequency (parameter 171) to get useful data without flooding your Z-Wave network with traffic.
Key Features
- 15A relay rated for high-power devices
- Detailed energy monitoring: watts, kWh, voltage, and current
- Z-Wave Plus 500 series chip with extended range
- Manual on/off button for local control
- LED status indicator (configurable)
- Works with any Z-Wave certified hub
- Acts as a Z-Wave signal repeater to strengthen your mesh network
Platform Integration Tips
- Home Assistant: The ZEN15 is auto-detected through Z-Wave JS. You get power, energy, voltage, and current entities out of the box. Use the energy dashboard to track consumption over time.
- SmartThings: Works natively. You can build automations that trigger when power draw crosses a threshold, which is handy for knowing when a washer or dryer cycle finishes.
- Hubitat: Fully supported with the built-in Zooz driver. Hubitat's local processing pairs well with the ZEN15 for fast automations.
Practical Use Cases
- Laundry notifications: Monitor wattage on your washer or dryer. When power drops below a threshold, trigger a notification that the cycle is done.
- Aquarium management: Schedule heaters, pumps, and lights on separate ZEN15 units with power monitoring to catch equipment failures early.
- Space heater safety: Set up automations to cut power after a set period or if nobody is home.
Troubleshooting
- Won't pair: Run an exclusion first. Put your hub in exclusion mode, click the ZEN15 button once, then try including again. This clears any leftover pairing data from the device.
- Power monitoring not updating: Check parameters 151-157 in your hub's device configuration. The default reporting thresholds may be too high for low-draw devices. Lower the wattage change threshold to get more frequent updates.
- Factory reset: Click the button rapidly 5 times, then press and hold until the LED flashes. This wipes all Z-Wave pairing info and restores defaults.
- LED always on: You can change LED behavior through parameter settings. Most hubs expose this as a configuration option in the device settings page.
- Firmware updates: Zooz periodically releases firmware updates. Check the Zooz website for your model's latest firmware and update through your hub's Z-Wave firmware update tool if available.
