What's in the Box

Your GE Smart Countertop Microwave includes the microwave unit, a glass turntable and roller ring, power cord, and a quick start guide. This microwave features built-in WiFi connectivity and works with the SmartHQ app for remote control, scan-to-cook functionality, and integration with voice assistants. As a countertop model, no special installation is required — just place it on a stable surface and plug it in.

Before You Begin

  • Download the SmartHQ app from the App Store or Google Play
  • Create a SmartHQ account or sign in to an existing one
  • Make sure your kitchen has a 2.4GHz WiFi network — the microwave does not support 5GHz
  • Choose a countertop location with adequate ventilation clearance — leave at least three inches of space on the sides and top, and keep the rear vents unobstructed
  • Ensure a dedicated grounded electrical outlet is within reach — avoid sharing the outlet with other high-draw appliances

Physical Setup

  1. Place the microwave. Set the GE Smart Countertop Microwave on a flat, stable countertop surface. Make sure the unit is level and that there's adequate space around it for ventilation. The unit should not hang over the edge of the counter.
  2. Install the turntable. Place the roller ring on the floor of the microwave cavity, then set the glass turntable on top of it. Make sure the turntable sits properly on the center hub and spins freely.
  3. Plug in the microwave. Connect the power cord to a grounded 120V outlet. The display should light up, and the clock will prompt you to set the time.
  4. Set the clock. Use the control panel to enter the current time. This ensures timer functions and scheduling work correctly.

WiFi and SmartHQ Setup

  1. Enable WiFi on the microwave. On the control panel, press and hold the WiFi or Connected Home button until the WiFi indicator begins blinking. This puts the microwave into pairing mode.
  2. Open the SmartHQ app. Tap Add Appliance and select your GE smart microwave model. The app will prompt you to scan the connected appliance QR code, typically found on the inside of the door or on the unit's label.
  3. Connect to WiFi. Choose your 2.4GHz network and enter the password. The microwave will connect to your network within about a minute.
  4. Confirm the connection. The WiFi indicator stops blinking and stays solid. Your microwave should now appear in the SmartHQ app with its current status.

Smart Features and Integration

The SmartHQ app enables several smart cooking features for your GE Smart Microwave. The scan-to-cook feature lets you scan a food product's barcode, and the app automatically sends the correct power level and cook time to the microwave. You can also start, stop, and monitor cooking remotely from the app. Link your SmartHQ account with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant for voice commands like "Alexa, microwave for two minutes" or "Hey Google, stop the microwave."

Tips for Best Performance

Use microwave-safe containers and avoid metal inside the cavity. The scan-to-cook feature works best with products that have UPC barcodes in GE's food database — common frozen meals and packaged foods are well supported. For custom cooking, the SmartHQ app lets you save favorite power and time combinations so you can reuse them with one tap. Keep the turntable clean and check that it rotates smoothly for even heating.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the microwave doesn't enter pairing mode, unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it back in, then try holding the WiFi button again. If the SmartHQ app can't find the unit, check that Bluetooth and location services are enabled on your phone, as some setup steps use these. If the turntable doesn't spin, verify the roller ring is properly positioned and nothing is obstructing the turntable hub. If food heats unevenly, make sure the turntable is rotating and consider stirring or rearranging food partway through cooking.
