What You Will Need
- Samsung Smart Front Load Washer (installed, connected to water supply and power)
- SmartThings app (iOS or Android) with a Samsung account
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network
- Your WiFi network name (SSID) and password
Step 1: Ensure Physical Installation is Complete
Before setting up smart features, verify the washer is properly installed:
- Hot and cold water supply lines are connected and the valves are open.
- The drain hose is properly routed into a standpipe or laundry sink.
- The washer is level (use the adjustable feet and check with a level).
- The power cord is plugged into a grounded outlet.
- Run a quick test cycle to confirm the washer fills, agitates, and drains correctly.
Step 2: Connect the Washer to WiFi
- Power on the washer and look for the Smart Control or WiFi button on the control panel.
- Press and hold the Smart Control button (or the designated WiFi button) for about three seconds until the WiFi indicator light begins blinking. This puts the washer into WiFi setup mode.
- On some models, you may need to press a specific button combination. Check the owner's manual for your exact model's WiFi setup method.
Step 3: Add the Washer in the SmartThings App
- Open the SmartThings app and tap the + icon, then select Add Device.
- Tap Samsung, then select Washer.
- The app will guide you through connecting the washer to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully.
- You may need to temporarily connect your phone to the washer's own WiFi hotspot (its network name usually starts with something like "Samsung_Washer") during the setup process.
- Enter your home WiFi network name and password when prompted.
- Wait for the washer to connect. The WiFi indicator on the control panel will turn solid when the connection is established.
- Name the washer and assign it to a room (e.g., "Laundry Room").
Step 4: Explore Smart Features
Once connected, the SmartThings app provides several useful capabilities:
- Cycle Monitoring — See the current cycle status, remaining time, and progress from anywhere using your phone.
- End-of-Cycle Notifications — Receive a push notification when the wash cycle is complete so your clothes do not sit in the washer.
- Remote Start — Start a wash cycle remotely. Load the washer, add detergent, and start it from your phone when ready. Remote start must be enabled on the washer's control panel first.
- Cycle Recommendations — Get AI-powered cycle recommendations based on fabric type and soil level.
- Troubleshooting — The app can diagnose error codes and suggest fixes without needing to call a technician.
- Energy Monitoring — Track water and energy usage across wash cycles.
Step 5: Enable Remote Start
- Load the washer and add detergent as you normally would.
- On the washer's control panel, press the Remote Start button. The indicator will illuminate.
- Close the washer door.
- The washer is now ready to be started remotely from the SmartThings app.
- Open the app, select the washer, choose a cycle, and tap Start.
Tips for Best Performance
- The washer connects directly via WiFi — no SmartThings Hub is required.
- If the WiFi connection drops, the washer continues to function normally. Only smart features (remote start, notifications, monitoring) are affected.
- Some Samsung washers support voice control through Alexa, Google Assistant, or Bixby. Link your SmartThings account to your preferred voice assistant.
- Keep the washer's firmware updated. The SmartThings app will notify you when an update is available.
- If the washer fails to connect to WiFi, check that you are using a 2.4 GHz network (not 5 GHz) and that the washer is within range of your router.
