Common Causes
- The smart plug has lost its Zigbee connection to the Aqara hub
- The outlet the smart plug is connected to has no power (tripped breaker or GFCI)
- Hub firmware is outdated, causing communication issues
- The plug's physical button is disabled by software settings
- Overload protection has tripped due to excessive wattage on the connected device
- The Zigbee mesh network is congested or the plug is out of range
Fix 1: Check the Power Source
- Verify the wall outlet is working by unplugging the smart plug and connecting another device (like a lamp or phone charger) to the same outlet.
- If the outlet is dead, check your home's electrical panel for a tripped breaker. Reset the breaker and test again.
- If the outlet is controlled by a wall switch, make sure that switch is in the ON position.
- For outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, or garages, check if a GFCI outlet upstream has tripped. Press the "Reset" button on the GFCI outlet.
Fix 2: Press the Physical Button
- The Aqara Smart Plug has a physical button on its face. Press it once to manually toggle the plug on or off.
- If the LED on the plug lights up and the connected device turns on, the plug itself is working and the issue is with the app or Zigbee connection.
- If pressing the button does nothing and the LED is completely dark, the plug may not be receiving power, or the hardware has failed.
- Note: Some configurations allow disabling the physical button through the Aqara Home app. Check the plug's settings to ensure the button is not set to "Disabled."
Fix 3: Restart the Aqara Hub
- Open the Aqara Home app and check if the hub is online.
- If the hub shows as offline, unplug it for 10 seconds and plug it back in.
- Wait 1 to 2 minutes for the hub to fully boot and reconnect to WiFi.
- Check the smart plug's status in the app. It should automatically reconnect once the hub is back online.
Fix 4: Check for Overload Protection
The Aqara Smart Plug has built-in overload protection that automatically cuts power if the connected device draws too much wattage.
- Unplug the device connected to the smart plug.
- Press the button on the smart plug to turn it back on. If the LED comes on, the overload protection was triggered.
- Check the wattage rating of the smart plug (typically 10A or 15A, depending on your model) and compare it to the power draw of the connected device.
- If the connected device exceeds the plug's rated capacity, do not use the smart plug with that device. Use a higher-rated smart switch or relay instead.
- If the device is within the rated capacity but the plug still trips, the device may have a momentary power spike during startup (common with motors and compressors). Try a plug rated for higher loads.
Fix 5: Re-Pair the Smart Plug
- Remove the plug from the Aqara Home app (device page > Settings > Remove Device).
- Press and hold the button on the smart plug for 10 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly, indicating it has entered pairing mode.
- In the app, tap + and select Add Accessory.
- Choose the Smart Plug from the device list and follow the pairing instructions.
- After pairing, assign it to a room and recreate any automations or schedules.
Fix 6: Update Firmware
- In the Aqara Home app, navigate to the hub's device page and check for firmware updates. Install any available updates.
- After updating the hub, check the smart plug's device page for device-specific firmware updates.
- Firmware updates can resolve Zigbee communication stability and overload protection accuracy issues.
Fix 7: Improve Zigbee Mesh Coverage
If the smart plug goes offline intermittently:
- Note that the Aqara Smart Plug itself is a mains-powered Zigbee device, which means it acts as a Zigbee repeater. However, it still needs to be within range of the hub or another repeater to function.
- Add another powered Zigbee device between the hub and the smart plug if there is a significant distance or multiple walls between them.
- Move the hub to a more central location in your home for better overall Zigbee coverage.
- Restart the hub after making changes to let the mesh reorganize.
When to Contact Support
If the smart plug's LED does not light up at all when plugged into a confirmed working outlet, and pressing and holding the button for 10 seconds produces no response, the internal hardware has likely failed. Contact Aqara Support for warranty replacement. Do not attempt to open or repair the plug yourself, as it contains mains voltage components.
