Common Causes

  • The switch or remote has lost its Zigbee pairing with the Aqara hub
  • Automations or bindings between the switch and target devices are misconfigured
  • Battery is depleted on wireless switches and remotes
  • The target device (light, plug, etc.) is offline or unresponsive
  • Zigbee mesh network has gaps, causing intermittent communication
  • Hub firmware needs updating

Fix 1: Verify the Switch Is Connected

  1. Open the Aqara Home app and locate the switch or remote in your device list.
  2. Check its status. If it shows "Offline" or "Unavailable," the switch has lost its Zigbee connection to the hub.
  3. For the H1 EU With Neutral wall switch, check that the circuit breaker is on and the switch's LED indicator is active. Unlike the no-neutral variant, this switch draws power from the neutral wire and should always have power if wired correctly.
  4. Press the switch and watch for the LED response. If the LED lights up and the state changes in the app but the target device does not respond, the issue is in the automation, not the switch itself.

Fix 2: Check the Target Device

Before troubleshooting the switch further, confirm the device it is supposed to control is working.

  1. Open the Aqara Home app and navigate to the target device (smart light, plug, etc.).
  2. Try controlling it directly from the app. If it does not respond, the problem is with the target device, not the switch.
  3. If the target device is offline, troubleshoot it separately — check its power, Zigbee range, and pairing status.

Fix 3: Rebuild or Fix the Automation

Aqara switches and remotes typically control other devices through automations created in the Aqara Home app. If the automation is broken, the switch will function physically but nothing will happen.

  1. In the Aqara Home app, go to Automations.
  2. Find the automation linked to the switch. Verify the following:
    • The trigger matches your intended action (single press, double press, long press, or specific button for multi-button remotes).
    • The target device is still paired and online.
    • The action is correct (toggle, turn on, turn off, set brightness, etc.).
    • The automation is enabled (not toggled off).
  3. If the automation looks correct but still does not work, delete it and create a new one from scratch. Occasionally, automations become corrupted after firmware updates or device re-pairing.

Fix 4: Replace Batteries on Wireless Remotes

If you are using a wireless switch or remote (such as the Aqara Wireless Mini Switch or Opple Remote), a dead battery is the most common cause of unresponsiveness.

  1. Open the battery compartment on the back of the remote.
  2. Replace the CR2032 coin cell battery with a fresh one, positive side (+) facing up.
  3. Close the cover and press a button. The LED should blink briefly to confirm power.
  4. Check the Aqara Home app to verify the remote shows as online.

Fix 5: Re-Pair the Switch or Remote

  1. Remove the device from the Aqara Home app (device page > Settings > Remove Device).
  2. Reset the switch or remote:
    • For a wired wall switch: press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly.
    • For a wireless remote: press and hold the reset button (small pinhole) for 5 seconds with a pin.
  3. In the app, tap + and add the device again. Follow the pairing instructions.
  4. Recreate your automations linking the switch to its target devices.

Fix 6: Strengthen the Zigbee Mesh

If the switch works intermittently — sometimes controlling devices and sometimes not — the Zigbee signal may be weak or unstable in that area of your home.

  1. Add mains-powered Zigbee devices (like an Aqara Smart Plug) between the hub and the switch to extend the mesh network.
  2. Restart the hub after adding new repeater devices to force the mesh to reorganize.
  3. Check that the hub is not surrounded by metal objects or enclosed in a cabinet, as this weakens the Zigbee signal.

When to Contact Support

If a wired switch does not respond at all despite correct wiring and a live circuit, or if it produces a burning smell or excessive heat, turn off the circuit breaker immediately and contact Aqara Support. For wireless remotes that do not power on with a confirmed fresh battery, the internal circuitry may be faulty and should be replaced under warranty.
