Understanding the Issue
The Eve Energy Smart Plug is a compact smart plug that provides HomeKit control and energy monitoring for connected devices. When the smart plug stops responding or cannot be controlled through the Home or Eve app, the issue generally relates to Thread or Bluetooth connectivity, power problems, or a hub configuration error.
Common Causes
- The smart plug has lost its Thread or Bluetooth connection to the Apple Home hub
- The wall outlet is not supplying power to the plug
- The home hub (HomePod, HomePod Mini, or Apple TV 4K) is offline or unresponsive
- The Thread mesh network has insufficient coverage in the plug's location
- The smart plug's firmware is outdated
- The device's HomeKit pairing has become corrupted
- Multiple automations are creating conflicts that cause unexpected behavior
Step 1: Check Physical Power and LED Status
- Look at the LED indicator on the Eve Energy Smart Plug. A lit LED confirms the plug is receiving power.
- If there is no LED light, unplug the smart plug and test the wall outlet with another device to confirm the outlet works.
- Plug the Eve Energy back in and press the physical button on the plug to toggle power. If the connected appliance turns on, the plug is working locally but may have a connectivity issue.
- If pressing the button does nothing, the plug may need a reset or may be defective.
Step 2: Verify Connectivity
- Open the Apple Home app and locate the Eve Energy Smart Plug.
- If it shows No Response, the plug cannot communicate with your home hub.
- Open the Eve app and check the device status. For Thread-enabled models, go to Settings > Thread Network to see if the plug appears on the Thread mesh.
- Verify that your Thread border router (HomePod Mini or Apple TV 4K) is connected and functioning. Check Home Settings in the Home app to see the hub's status.
Step 3: Improve Thread or Bluetooth Coverage
- If the Eve Energy Smart Plug is far from your Thread border router, Thread coverage may be insufficient. Powered Thread devices (like other Eve Energy plugs or Eve Light Switch) between the plug and the border router act as Thread routers and extend the mesh.
- For older Bluetooth-only models, the plug must be within approximately 10 to 15 meters of a home hub. Move the hub closer or add another hub to extend coverage.
- Avoid placing the plug behind heavy furniture or inside metal cabinets that block wireless signals.
Step 4: Restart the Plug and Hub
- Unplug the Eve Energy Smart Plug from the wall for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Restart your Apple Home hub by unplugging it for 30 seconds and reconnecting it.
- Wait two to three minutes for both devices to fully boot and reconnect.
- Check the Home app to see if the plug is now responsive.
Step 5: Update Firmware
- Open the Eve app and go to Settings > Devices.
- Select the Eve Energy Smart Plug and check for firmware updates.
- Install any available updates. The update will be delivered over Thread or Bluetooth depending on your model.
- After the update, test the plug's responsiveness from the Home app.
Step 6: Reset and Re-Add the Smart Plug
- Press and hold the button on the Eve Energy Smart Plug for 10 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly, indicating a factory reset.
- Remove the plug from the Home app by long-pressing the accessory, tapping the settings gear, and choosing Remove Accessory.
- Re-add the plug by scanning the HomeKit setup code on the device or its packaging.
- Assign it to the appropriate room and reconfigure any automations or schedules.
Additional Tips
- Eve Energy Smart Plugs that support Thread also function as Thread routers, which strengthens the overall mesh network for all your Thread accessories.
- If the plug turns on or off at unexpected times, review all HomeKit automations and Eve schedules for conflicting rules.
- Use the Eve app's energy monitoring to verify the connected device is drawing power within the plug's rated capacity. Overloaded plugs may shut off as a safety measure.
