Identifying the Issue
If your IKEA BADRING Water Leak Sensor is not pairing with your Dirigera hub or is failing to report water detection, you may notice the sensor is missing from the IKEA Home Smart app, the app shows the sensor as offline, test drips of water on the sensor do not trigger an alert, or automations linked to the sensor do not fire. The BADRING is a Zigbee water leak sensor that detects the presence of water on its contact pads and sends an alert through the IKEA Dirigera hub.
Common Causes
- Dead battery — The BADRING runs on a coin cell battery, and a depleted cell will prevent all communication
- Failed pairing attempt — If the sensor was too far from the hub during initial pairing, or if there was Zigbee interference, the pairing may not have completed
- Dirty or obstructed contact pads — The water detection contacts on the bottom of the sensor must be clean and in direct contact with the floor surface to detect water
- Zigbee range issues — Battery-powered sensors do not repeat Zigbee signals, so the BADRING relies on nearby powered Zigbee devices or the hub itself for communication
- Hub firmware incompatibility — Older hub firmware may not fully support the BADRING, causing pairing or reporting failures
Step-by-Step Fixes
- Replace the battery. Open the BADRING sensor housing and install a fresh coin cell battery (typically a CR2032). A weak battery is the most common reason a sensor stops communicating.
- Clean the contact pads. Flip the sensor over and inspect the metal contact pads on the bottom. Wipe them clean with a dry cloth. Dust, debris, or residue can insulate the pads and prevent water detection.
- Factory reset the sensor. Press and hold the pairing button on the sensor for at least 10 seconds. The LED will flash to confirm the reset. This clears old pairing data.
- Move close to the hub for pairing. Place the BADRING within a few feet of the Dirigera hub. Open the IKEA Home Smart app, tap +, and select Sensors. Press the pairing button once on the BADRING and wait for the app to discover it.
- Test water detection. After pairing, place a few drops of water across the contact pads on the bottom of the sensor. The IKEA Home Smart app should show a water detected alert within a few seconds. If it does not respond, try pressing the contacts firmly against a damp surface.
- Update firmware. Check for firmware updates for both the BADRING and the Dirigera hub in the IKEA Home Smart app. Apply any available updates to ensure compatibility.
- Relocate to permanent position. Once confirmed working, move the BADRING to its intended location (under a sink, near a washing machine, by a water heater). Ensure there are powered Zigbee devices nearby to relay its signal to the hub.
When to Contact Support
If the sensor LED does not flash at all during a reset attempt with a fresh battery, or if the contact pads never trigger a detection even when fully submerged, the sensor may be defective. Contact IKEA customer support for a warranty replacement.
Prevention Tips
Place the BADRING on a flat, hard surface where water would naturally pool — avoid carpet or uneven surfaces that could prevent water from reaching the contact pads. Check the battery annually and replace proactively. Maintain a strong Zigbee mesh with powered IKEA devices between the sensor and the Dirigera hub, since the BADRING is battery-powered and cannot repeat signals on its own. Test the sensor periodically with a few drops of water to confirm it is still responsive and that alerts are reaching your phone through the IKEA Home Smart app.
