Identifying the Issue

If your Lutron Pico remotes are not controlling their assigned devices, you may notice that pressing buttons on the Pico produces no response from the lights, fan, shades, or other paired equipment. The small LED on the Pico may or may not flash when you press a button. In some cases, the remote may work intermittently, controlling devices from certain locations but not others. It is important to determine whether the issue affects a single Pico or multiple remotes, as this helps narrow down the cause.

Common Causes

  • The Pico remote's CR2032 battery is depleted after years of use
  • The Pico has lost its pairing with the Caseta Smart Bridge or the assigned device
  • The Smart Bridge is offline, which can affect Pico-to-device routing for some configurations
  • The Pico is out of Clear Connect RF range of the bridge (approximately 30 feet through standard walls)
  • The target device (dimmer, switch, plug) has lost power or has been removed from the system
  • A recent system change, such as adding or removing devices, has disrupted the Pico's device assignment

Step-by-Step Fixes

  1. Check the Pico LED: Press any button on the Pico and look for the small LED indicator. If the LED does not flash, the battery is likely dead. Replace the CR2032 coin-cell battery by removing the back cover of the Pico (press the tab at the bottom and slide off the cover). Insert a new battery with the positive side facing up.
  2. Verify the target device: Confirm that the light, fan, or other device the Pico controls is actually powered on and functional. Try controlling it from the Caseta app or by pressing the physical buttons on the device itself. If the device does not respond to the app either, the problem is with the device, not the Pico.
  3. Check bridge status: Ensure the Caseta Smart Bridge shows two solid green LEDs. While some direct Pico-to-device associations work without the bridge, most configurations route through the bridge. Restart the bridge by unplugging it for 15 seconds.
  4. Re-pair the Pico: Open the Caseta app, find the Pico in your device list, and check its assignment. If it appears unassigned or linked to the wrong device, delete the Pico from the app and add it again. Go to "Add Device," select "Remotes," choose "Pico Remote," and press the top button when prompted. Reassign it to the correct device or scene.
  5. Reset the Pico remote: Press and hold the top and bottom buttons on the Pico simultaneously for 10 seconds until the LED blinks. This clears all pairing data from the remote. You will need to add it back through the Caseta app.
  6. Test range: Stand near the Smart Bridge and test the Pico. If it works near the bridge but not in its normal location, the device is out of range. Consider repositioning the bridge or adding Caseta devices between the bridge and the Pico to extend the RF mesh.

When to Contact Support

If the Pico remote LED does not light up even after replacing the battery, the remote may have a hardware failure. Contact Lutron technical support at 1-844-LUTRON1 for replacement options. If multiple Pico remotes stop working simultaneously, the issue is more likely with the Smart Bridge, and support can help diagnose the hub remotely.

Prevention Tips

Keep spare CR2032 batteries on hand, as the Pico does not provide low battery warnings. The battery typically lasts 10 years, but heavy use or extreme temperatures can shorten its lifespan. When reorganizing your Caseta system or replacing devices, always check the Pico assignments in the app to ensure they still point to the correct targets. Avoid storing Pico remotes in drawers where the buttons may be continuously pressed, as this drains the battery faster.
