Motorised blinds and shades open on schedule, sunrise or sun position, and are one of the few smart home upgrades with a measurable effect on heating and cooling bills.
The energy case is real. Closing blinds on south-facing windows during summer afternoons cuts solar gain before it becomes heat you have to remove; opening them on winter mornings does the reverse. Automating on sun position rather than clock time is what makes this work, because the sun moves through the year and a fixed schedule does not.
Power is the decision that constrains everything else. Battery-powered blinds are straightforward to retrofit and need recharging every few months to a year depending on how often they move. Hardwired units never need charging but require cabling to each window, which realistically means doing it during renovation. Solar-charged options sit between the two and work well on windows that get direct light.
Measure before ordering. Most motorised blinds are made to size and cannot be returned. Note whether the mount is inside or outside the recess, and check the depth available — motor tubes are thicker than a manual roller and a shallow recess may not take one.
For retrofits, motorised tilt rods and roller motors that fit existing blinds are worth considering; they are far cheaper than replacing the blinds and cover most of the benefit.
