Locks

Smart locks are one of those upgrades that sounds like a luxury until you live with one - then you can't go back. No more fumbling for keys, no more wondering if you locked the door. But picking the right one takes some thought because you're replacing something that already works fine, and a bad choice is a real headache.

Deadbolt replacement vs. retrofit is the first decision. Full replacements (Schlage Encode, Yale Assure) swap your entire lock and give you the most features - keypads, fingerprint readers, auto-lock. Retrofit locks (like August) fit over your existing deadbolt from the inside, so you keep your current keys and it looks normal from outside. Retrofits are easier to install and great for renters, but can't offer a keypad.

How you unlock it matters more than you think. Keypads are the most reliable - punch in a code and you're in. Fingerprint readers are fast but struggle with wet or dirty hands. Auto-unlock using your phone's location is inconsistent - most people find it either unlocks too early or not at all. Get a lock with a keypad and treat everything else as a bonus.

Keep a physical key backup. Some locks are keypad-only with no keyhole, and while that looks clean, a dead battery means you're locked out. Most quality smart locks include a key override - stash one somewhere safe.

Protocol matters for locks specifically:

• WiFi - Easy setup, remote access without a hub, but drains batteries faster.
• Z-Wave/Zigbee - Better battery life, very reliable, but requires a hub. Best if you already run a smart home system.
• Thread/Matter - Great battery life and local control. Still early days but this is where things are heading.
• Bluetooth only - Limited range, no remote access unless paired with a WiFi bridge. Avoid unless you only need proximity unlock.

One last thing: check your door before you buy. Measure your backset (usually 2-3/8" or 2-3/4") and check your door thickness. Most smart locks work with standard doors, but older homes can throw curveballs.
