Setting Up Your First Matter Devices

What You Need Before You Start

Before you unbox your first Matter device, take a few minutes to make sure your environment is ready. The requirements are not complicated, but missing one can lead to a frustrating setup experience.

First, you need a Matter controller. This is the hub or app that manages your Matter devices. The most common options are:

  • Apple Home: Requires a HomePod, HomePod Mini, or Apple TV 4K (2nd gen or later) as a home hub. Your iPhone or iPad needs iOS/iPadOS 16.1 or later.
  • Google Home: Requires a Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wi-Fi Pro, or other compatible Nest device. The Google Home app must be updated to the version with Matter support.
  • Amazon Alexa: Supported on many Echo devices (4th gen and later). The Alexa app handles commissioning.
  • Samsung SmartThings: The SmartThings hub v3 or the SmartThings Station supports Matter. The SmartThings app handles setup.

Second, you need a working home network. Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices will join your Wi-Fi directly. If you plan to use Thread devices, you need at least one Thread border router, which in many cases is the same device serving as your Matter controller.

Third, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. The initial commissioning process uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to communicate with the new device before it joins your network.

Step-by-Step: Adding Your First Device

Let us walk through adding a Matter smart plug, one of the simplest devices to start with. The process is nearly identical regardless of which ecosystem you use.

  1. Unbox and power on: Plug in your Matter smart plug. Most devices enter pairing mode automatically when first powered on. You will typically see an LED blinking to indicate it is ready.
  2. Open your smart home app: In Apple Home, tap the plus icon and select "Add Accessory." In Google Home, tap the plus icon and choose "Set up device," then "New device." In Alexa, go to Devices and tap the plus icon.
  3. Scan the Matter code: Point your phone's camera at the QR code on the device or its packaging. Alternatively, you can manually enter the numeric setup code. This code is unique to your device and serves as proof that you physically possess it.
  4. Wait for discovery: Your phone will discover the device via Bluetooth and begin the pairing process. For Wi-Fi devices, you will be prompted to confirm your Wi-Fi network. For Thread devices, the credentials are shared automatically from your border router.
  5. Assign a room and name: Give the device a descriptive name and assign it to a room. Choose names that are easy to say if you plan to use voice commands. "Kitchen counter plug" is better than "Smart Plug 3."
  6. Test it: Toggle the device on and off from the app. Notice how fast the response is. That is local control in action.

Adding the Same Device to a Second Ecosystem

One of Matter's best features is multi-admin support. Here is how to add that same smart plug to a second ecosystem. On the device's settings page in your first app (the one you just used), look for an option like "Turn on pairing mode" or "Share device." This generates a new pairing code. Open your second smart home app and follow the same "Add device" process, using the new pairing code. The device now appears in both ecosystems and can be controlled from either one independently.

Keep in mind that automations are ecosystem-specific. An automation you create in Apple Home will not appear in Google Home, even though both control the same device. You will want to create your automations in whichever ecosystem you use most frequently.

Troubleshooting Common Setup Issues

Even with Matter's simplified setup, things can occasionally go wrong. Here are the most common issues and their solutions:

Device not found during scanning: Make sure Bluetooth is enabled and you are within a few feet of the device. Power cycle the device by unplugging it for 10 seconds and plugging it back in. Some devices require a factory reset before they can be paired. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the reset procedure, usually a long press on the device's button.

Wi-Fi connection fails: Matter devices only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router uses a combined 2.4/5 GHz network, this usually works fine, but some routers have trouble. If the device cannot join, try temporarily creating a separate 2.4 GHz network for the initial setup. Also, make sure your Wi-Fi password does not contain unusual special characters, as some devices have trouble with them.

Thread device joins but responds slowly: This usually means the device is too far from the nearest Thread router or border router. Add another mains-powered Thread device between the problematic device and your border router to extend the mesh.

Recommended First Matter Devices

If you are just getting started with Matter, begin with devices that have a high impact and low risk. Smart plugs are the easiest entry point because they do not require any wiring and you can move them around. Smart light bulbs are another good starting point, especially if you want to experiment with color and dimming control. Contact sensors on doors and windows are great for building simple automations, like turning on a light when a door opens.

Save more complex installations like smart switches, thermostats, and locks for after you are comfortable with the basics. These devices often involve wiring or replacing existing hardware, and you want to be confident in your setup before tackling them.
