Before You Begin
The Eve Weather (Matter) is a compact outdoor weather station that monitors temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. This Matter-enabled version works with Apple Home, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and other Matter-compatible platforms. It communicates over Thread, providing a reliable mesh network connection without Wi-Fi dependency.
What You Will Need
- Eve Weather (Matter) sensor
- A Matter-compatible smart home hub (Apple HomePod, HomePod Mini, Apple TV 4K, Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen, or other Thread border router)
- A smartphone with your preferred Matter-compatible app (Apple Home, Google Home, Eve app, or SmartThings)
- The Matter setup code (printed on the device or included card)
- AAA batteries (included with the sensor)
Step 1: Prepare the Eve Weather
- Remove the Eve Weather from its packaging and locate the battery compartment on the back.
- Insert the included AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity as marked inside the compartment.
- Close the battery cover securely. The sensor will power on automatically.
- Locate the Matter setup code — a numeric code and QR code printed on the device or on the included setup card. Keep this accessible for pairing.
Step 2: Choose Your Smart Home Platform
Because Eve Weather supports Matter, you can add it to any Matter-compatible ecosystem. Choose the platform you want to use as the primary controller:
- Apple Home: Use the Home app on your iPhone or iPad. Requires a HomePod, HomePod Mini, or Apple TV 4K as a home hub.
- Google Home: Use the Google Home app on your phone. Requires a Nest Hub (2nd Gen) or other Google Thread border router.
- Samsung SmartThings: Use the SmartThings app. Requires a SmartThings Station or compatible hub.
- Eve App: You can also use the Eve app for detailed weather data, graphs, and history. On iOS, it pairs through Apple Home first.
Step 3: Add the Sensor to Your Smart Home
- Open your chosen smart home app and navigate to the device pairing or "Add Device" section.
- Select Matter device or Add Matter accessory when prompted for the device type.
- Scan the Matter QR code on the Eve Weather using your phone's camera, or enter the numeric setup code manually.
- Wait for the app to discover the sensor. This may take 30 to 60 seconds as the device joins the Thread network.
- Assign the Eve Weather to a room (such as "Backyard," "Patio," or "Garden") when prompted.
- Give the device a recognizable name like "Outdoor Weather" or "Patio Weather Station."
Step 4: Place the Sensor
- Choose an outdoor location that is sheltered from direct rain and prolonged direct sunlight for the most accurate readings.
- Mount the sensor using the included stand or attach it to a surface. Avoid placing it near heat sources like grills or HVAC vents.
- Ensure the sensor is within Thread mesh range of your border router or other Thread devices. Thread devices extend the network, so placing other Thread accessories between the sensor and your hub improves reliability.
- After placement, verify that readings appear in your app within a few minutes.
Step 5: Configure and Explore Data
- Open your smart home app and check that temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure readings are updating.
- If using the Eve app on iOS, open it to view detailed graphs showing historical weather trends over hours, days, and weeks.
- Set up automations based on weather data — for example, trigger a notification when temperature drops below freezing, or activate a smart plug when humidity reaches a certain level.
Tips for Best Results
- Place at least one or two Thread devices between the Eve Weather and your border router to strengthen the mesh network.
- Replace batteries when readings become inconsistent or stop updating. Battery life typically lasts around one year.
- If readings seem inaccurate after initial setup, allow 15 to 30 minutes for the sensor to acclimate to ambient conditions.
- You can share the Eve Weather across multiple Matter platforms using the Multi-Admin feature in your primary app's device settings.
